{"id":256001,"date":"2016-10-08T08:55:47","date_gmt":"2016-10-08T08:55:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=256001"},"modified":"2016-10-08T08:55:47","modified_gmt":"2016-10-08T08:55:47","slug":"commonwealth-sarbah-hall-students-clash-on-ug-campus-set-car-ablaze","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/10\/commonwealth-sarbah-hall-students-clash-on-ug-campus-set-car-ablaze\/","title":{"rendered":"Commonwealth, Sarbah Hall students clash on UG campus; set car ablaze"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some students of the University of Ghana, Legon clashed today [Saturday] ahead of the school&#8217;s matriculation of freshmen for the 2016\/2017 academic year.<\/p>\n<p>The clashes were between students of Commonwealth hall and Mensah-Sarbah hall.<\/p>\n<p>According to eyewitnesses, the clashes began when a member of Mensah-Sarbah was attacked by Commonwealth boys which led to a retaliatory reaction from the Mensah-Sarbah camp.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/f6140f98-f2a7-4f11-af94-4a152075ee01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-256002\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/f6140f98-f2a7-4f11-af94-4a152075ee01.jpg\" alt=\"f6140f98-f2a7-4f11-af94-4a152075ee01\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Reports indicate\u00a0that the procession of some level 100 students to the Matriculation ground was ongoing when students began throwing stones.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-256020\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/8b4ec239-f179-4dbd-97b9-07df2bc4f6cb.jpg\" alt=\"8b4ec239-f179-4dbd-97b9-07df2bc4f6cb\" width=\"655\" height=\"491\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to <strong>Citi News&#8217;<\/strong> sources, commonwealth is accusing Sarbah of inviting &#8216;Katangas&#8217; to reinforce their base in anticipation of a clash.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The commonwealth hall camp were clad in red while their arch rivals \u00a0sarbah hall were clad in black.<\/p>\n<p>The two camps fired musketry amid chanting war songs. They also wielded broken seats, stones, slabs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-256017\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/40c13165-f5f1-4d8a-b434-4b7286f57844.jpg\" alt=\"40c13165-f5f1-4d8a-b434-4b7286f57844\" width=\"617\" height=\"472\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A \u00a0vehicle was also set ablaze in the process.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-256022\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/7b4a524c-db19-488b-860e-cd0cd7f3bcd9.jpg\" alt=\"7b4a524c-db19-488b-860e-cd0cd7f3bcd9\" width=\"590\" height=\"443\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Police and Fire service personnel eventually arrived on the scene, in front of Mensah-Sarbah hall, to calm tensions and prevent an escalation of the clashes.The fire in the burning car was also put out.<\/p>\n<p>Police presence has currently been deployed to reinforce security in the school.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Commonwealth, Sarbah hall rivalry\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is a long standing rivalry between the two traditional halls which is demonstrated in sportsmanship and academics.<\/p>\n<p>This however turns bitter and sometimes bloody on occasions like matriculation.
