The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) is holding its 50th national delegates congress in Hohoe in the Volta Region today.<\/p>\n
The 4-day congress will see over 900 delegates from various tertiary institutions across the country elect new national executives to take office from November.<\/p>\n
4 aspirants are contesting for the position of presidency with others aspiring for the remaining portfolios including, General Secretary, Coordinating Secretary, Treasurer, Financial Controller, Education and Democratization Secretary and Press and Information Secretary.<\/p>\n
The Presidential aspirants are Luqman Abubakar of UDS Nyankpala, Julian Mawusi Cobbina of GIMPA Law School, Frank Amoakohene of the UG Medical School and Israel Appiah of the University of Ghana Accra City Campus.<\/p>\n
The Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee of the congress, Mikdad Mohammed told citifmonline.com<\/strong> the congress will afford the students\u2019 body in the country an opportunity to present their official position on various national education issues to the government through a communique.<\/p>\n \u2018Contention within NUGS\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n Mikdad Mohammed said although previous NUGS congresses have been bedeviled with contentions and agitations that have negatively affected the image of the students\u2019 body, the committee has put in place all the relevant mechanisms to ensure this year\u2019s congress is held with in an \u201copen, transparent and fair\u201d manner.<\/p>\n \u201cThe person we will elect will be the 50th<\/sup> NUGS president. We have put everything in place in terms of the safety, security, accommodation and the electoral process itself is arranged so even if there though, the grievances, they may come, they will have less grounds [to argue],\u201d Mikdad said.<\/p>\n He added that, they \u00a0\u201c will hold a debate and public forum and then issue a communique on various issues affecting the development of the education sector.\u201d<\/p>\n The election will be held on Saturday [October 8] and the winners declared on the same day.<\/p>\n The theme for this year\u2019s congress is \u201cBuilding a modernized society with influence of quality education; challenges, lessons, and prospects for the Ghanaian policy maker \u2013 the NUGS perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n I\u2019m still at post \u2013 NUGS president insists\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n Michael Paa-Quecy Adu, the outgoing\u00a0President of National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), whose eligibility was challenged, months after his election dismissed a ruling of a court that asked him to step aside.<\/p>\n A Madina District Magistrate Court on November 26 ordered Mr. Adu to stay off the post until a case challenging his eligibility is resolved.<\/p>\n The court presided over by His Worship, Richard D.
