{"id":253249,"date":"2016-09-29T09:37:56","date_gmt":"2016-09-29T09:37:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=253249"},"modified":"2016-09-29T09:37:56","modified_gmt":"2016-09-29T09:37:56","slug":"ec-rejects-nana-addos-filing-fee-over-law-suit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/09\/ec-rejects-nana-addos-filing-fee-over-law-suit\/","title":{"rendered":"EC declines Nana Addo&#8217;s filing fee over suit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Electoral Commission (EC) refused to accept the filing fee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, when he submitted his forms today [Thursday].<\/p>\n<p>The EC says this is temporary following a court injunction secured\u00a0by the Progressive People\u2019s Party (PPP) over the hike in the filling fees.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission will also not be accepting filing fees from all other presidential and parliamentary aspirants.\u00a0The EC however accepted the nomination forms of the NPP Flagbearer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_253292\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-253292\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/npp-files-nomination-forms-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-253292 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/npp-files-nomination-forms-1.jpg\" alt=\"npp-files-nomination-forms-1\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-253292\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Charlotte Osei, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The PPP\u00a0<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/09\/19\/ppp-sues-ec-over-high-filing-fees\/\"><strong>filed a suit<\/strong><\/a><\/span> at the High Court on September 19 seeking an interlocutory injunction to prevent the EC from receiving the nominations.<\/p>\n<p>The PPP,\u00a0among other things, was seeking a declaration that Regulation 45 of C.I. 94 is discriminatory, arbitrary, capricious and unreasonable.<\/p>\n<p>The EC opened nominations earlier in\u00a0<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/09\/08\/presidential-nominees-to-pay-ghc50000-as-filing-fee\/\">September<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0and pegged the filing fees for presidential hopefuls at GHc 50,000 and that of parliamentary nominees at GHc 10,000.<\/p>\n<p>Some aggrieved parties subsequently asked the EC to review the amount describing it as \u201cexorbitant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom-led PPP followed its concerns with <strong><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/09\/19\/ppp-sues-ec-over-high-filing-fees\/\">a suit<\/a><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0seeking the injunction to prevent the EC from receiving the nominations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Nana-Addo2.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-253247\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Nana-Addo2.jpeg\" alt=\"nana-addo2\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nana Akufo-Addo was the first presidential nominee at the EC headquarters to file his nomination forms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Citi News<\/strong>&#8216; Sixtus Dong Ullo reported that the NPP Flagbearer was flanked by his Campaign Manager; Peter Mac Manu, Acing Party Chairman; Freddy Blay and the Acting General Secretary; John Boadu.<\/p>\n<p>Also present in support were the Former Finance Minister; John Osafo Marfo, the party&#8217;s National Women&#8217;s Organiser,\u00a0Otiko\u00a0Djaba and the\u00a0Chairman of the NPP Council of Elders; C.K. Tedam.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other controversy ahead of filing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just two days to the deadline for the submission of nomination forms on Friday, September 30, the EC came out remind presidential and parliamentary nominees they will not be eligible to contest the elections if they did not declare their assets with the Auditor General.<\/p>\n<p>The EC in a statement said the \u201ccandidates are to take note of the requirement to declare their assets to the Auditor-General in order to meet the eligibility criteria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With two days to the deadline, only the Flagbearer of the Progressive People&#8217;s Party (PPP), Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, has come out publicly to confirm the declaration of his assets to the Auditor General.<\/p>\n<p>The NPP did not receive this warmly as it said the criteria was only binding persons already holding public office, and not those seeking to be office.
