{"id":253082,"date":"2016-09-29T06:00:16","date_gmt":"2016-09-29T06:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=253082"},"modified":"2016-09-29T06:00:16","modified_gmt":"2016-09-29T06:00:16","slug":"we-dont-even-have-a-4-sheets-accra-psychiatric-hospital-laments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/09\/we-dont-even-have-a-4-sheets-accra-psychiatric-hospital-laments\/","title":{"rendered":"We don&#8217;t even have A-4 sheets &#8211; Accra Psychiatric Hospital laments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The dire situation of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital has deteriorated to the point where the facility does not even have access to basic items such as A-4 sheets to take down minor but critical information.<\/p>\n<p>A member of the Hospital\u2019s Public Relations Unit, Edwina Ankomah, lamented on <strong>Eyewitness News<\/strong> that, the hospital is in dire need of basic things like \u201cgloves, disinfectants, and\u00a0stationary like paper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust a plain sheet &#8211; because someone will walk in and would want a medical report for school or something and we don\u2019t have even an A-4 sheet,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Accra Psychiatric Hospital shuts down OPD\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Persons\u00a0who visited the Accra Psychiatric Hospital on Wednesday, were <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/09\/28\/accra-psychiatric-hospital-shuts-down-opd-audio\/\">turned away<\/a>,\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>and the\u00a0hospital\u2019s administrators have said they were compelled to take such a decision due to worsening financial constraints.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe little we have, we have to have able to take care of those on the ward,\u201d Mrs Ankomah said, hence the hospital management\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p>She narrated that, the situation \u201cgot worse in July when our suppliers decided not to supply us with anything that we needed to run the hospital. That is when it got bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0hospital management is currently in talks with the ministry of health to try and solve the current situation.<\/p>\n<p>As at now, the money that comes to the hospital, like a recent amount of GHc 521,000, is used to settle debts.<\/p>\n<p>But since July, Mrs Ankomah revealed that, the hospital has been living off donations, but \u201chow long can we survive on donations,\u201d she asked?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gov&#8217;t&#8217;s pledge to\u00a0mental healthcare<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With elections around the corner, the National Democratic Congress administration has made some pledges to mental healthcare, despite the apparent neglect of existing ones.<\/p>\n<p>The NDC,\u00a0in it&#8217;s 2016 manifesto, <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/09\/14\/ndc-will-support-nhis-with-oil-money-mahama\/\">promised to build<\/a><\/strong><\/span> two more psychiatric hospitals if voted into office.<\/p>\n<p>President John Mahama said the\u00a0NDC government would prioritize mental healthcare and ensure the strict implementation of the Mental Health Act, 2012, act 846.<\/p>\n<p>The Accra Psychiatric Hospital is not the only one under-resourced, as managers of the Pantang Hospital have similar concerns.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Delali Adogla-Bessa\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The dire situation of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital has deteriorated to the point where the facility does not even have access to basic items such as A-4 sheets to take down minor but critical information.
