{"id":252748,"date":"2016-09-28T06:03:36","date_gmt":"2016-09-28T06:03:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=252748"},"modified":"2016-09-28T06:03:36","modified_gmt":"2016-09-28T06:03:36","slug":"ten-brt-buses-now-registered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/09\/ten-brt-buses-now-registered\/","title":{"rendered":"Ten BRT buses now registered"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ten\u00a0of the buses being tested as part of the redefined &#8216;Bus Rapid Transit&#8217; (BRT) services, have been registered, after the operators were criticized for hurriedly dispatching the buses onto to the road without registration and insurance cover.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty eight buses are also expected to be registered\u00a0today [Wednesday].<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-252746\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/b2eaaf64-cfac-4c3c-8062-e122c7c043b5.jpg\" alt=\"registered-brt\" width=\"600\" height=\"409\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Buses not registered\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The move comes a day after the Marketing and Communications Manager of the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive,\u00a0operators of the Service, indicated that<a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/09\/26\/brt-buses-on-test-yet-to-be-insured\/\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong> none of the buses<\/strong> <\/span><\/a>had either been registered or insured.<\/p>\n<p>The BRT transport service commenced test operations on Monday with 9 buses plying the Amasaman \u2013 Achimota \u2013 Circle \u2013Accra route with free rides.<\/p>\n<p>However operators identified challenges with the log system which provided information such as when and where passengers would alight to drivers.<\/p>\n<p>Concerns over the non-registration and lack of insurance for the\u00a0buses and challenges with communication between passengers and the bus drivers, forced the Managers of the service to suspend operations a day after the buses were put on the streets\u00a0in a test.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-252283\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/45a5b8ea-bcd4-4f03-a4bb-c86cbc8ab534.jpg\" alt=\"BRT buses\" width=\"600\" height=\"398\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Officials of the BRT system told <strong>Citi News<\/strong> that services were also suspended to enable them train the drivers on how to use the system to facilitate non-obstructive communication between them and passengers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Service to be expanded<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The newly introduced bus service is expected to be expanded to other parts of Accra to help commute passengers faster and more conveniently.<\/p>\n<p>The bus will soon be operational on the Accra \u2013 Legon \u2013 Madina \u2013 Adenta stretch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No dedicated lanes for \u2018BRT\u2019, it\u2019s now Quality Bus System<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE), implementers of the supposed Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) service, have given the project a <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/09\/27\/no-dedicated-lanes-for-brt-its-now-quality-bus-system\/\">new name<\/a><\/strong><\/span> because the buses for now do not have dedicated lanes as\u00a0expected.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on <strong>Eyewitness News<\/strong>, the Chief Executive Officer of (GAPTE), Sampson Gyamenah, admitted there were currently no dedicated lanes, a critical element of any BRT system and instead called what was being implemented a Quality Bus System.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not have a full blown dedicated lane for the buses so I will also hesitate to call what we are putting in place a BRT.
