{"id":252613,"date":"2016-09-28T06:04:48","date_gmt":"2016-09-28T06:04:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=252613"},"modified":"2016-09-28T06:04:48","modified_gmt":"2016-09-28T06:04:48","slug":"400000-youth-join-labour-force-yearly-acet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/09\/400000-youth-join-labour-force-yearly-acet\/","title":{"rendered":"400,000 youth join labour force yearly &#8211; ACET"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A research conducted by the African Centre for Economic Transformation (ACET) shows that about four hundred thousand people enter the labour market every year seeking various forms of employment.<\/p>\n<p>According to a Senior Research Fellow at ACET, Dr. William Baah Boateng, the situation demands a more proactive approach to addressing unemployment in the country.<\/p>\n<p>He said, the existing job creation avenues need to be expanded to ensure that the unemployment figures do not continue to increase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe number of people who flow into the labour market every year now has gotten to 400,000 with different kinds of skill. We have to look at how we can create jobs to absorb this number,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the<strong> Citi Breakfast Show<\/strong> on Tuesday, Dr. Baah Boateng said although many economic indicators suggest Ghana is experiencing growth, the source of the growth must be interrogated before the appropriate conclusions are made.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrowth is not enough, you need to look at the source of the growth\u2026.where the growth is coming from is crucial. If the growth is not coming from areas that generate jobs, then you are going to have problems,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Unemployment a major concern\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Institute of Economic Affairs, (IEA) <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/20\/unemployment-ghanas-biggest-problem-iea-survey-reveals\/\">recently named unemployment as a major problem<\/a><\/strong><\/span> facing the country.<\/p>\n<p>According to the survey, urban dwellers, females, and the majority of people living in the Western, Eastern and Central regions, identified unemployment as their biggest problem in Ghana.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Unemployed graduates beg EC for jobs\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Madam Charlotte Osei has also bemoaned the high level of joblessness in the country saying it is cause for worry.<br \/>\nThe Unemployed Graduates Association of Ghana (UGAG), and the Unemployed Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/09\/05\/unemployed-graduates-teachers-beg-ec-to-engage-them-for-elections\/\">urged\u00a0on the Electoral Commission (EC) to recruit their members<\/a><\/strong><\/span> for the collation of results during the upcoming elections on December 7.<\/p>\n<p>The two groups, in a statement signed by the President of UGAG, Desmond Bress-Biney argued that, they are in the best position to carry out such tasks given that their members graduated from varying tertiary institutions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Unemployment rate in Ghana a time bomb&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The New Patriotic Party\u2019s (NPP) Presidential Nominee, Nana Akufo Addo has expressed <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>worry over the \u00a0Ghana\u2019s soaring rate of youth unemployment<\/strong><\/span>.
