The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), is urging graduates from the various Colleges of Education, to demand appointment letters from the Ghana Education Service (GES) before accepting postings to teach.

The GES last week said it will post all newly trained teachers to various schools across the country without appointment letters.

The service said the teachers will be served with their appointment letters after it receives financial clearance from the Finance Ministry.

But according to the General Secretary of GNAT, David Ofori Acheampong, the arrangement is improper.

He said there were fears the teachers will not receive their salaries after accepting the postings because their data may not reflect on the government payroll to receive salaries.

“Look back at last year, some teachers were employed by district directors and we were told that the Ministry of Finance did not know them because district directors are not the appointing authorities. And we want to avoid all those problems this year,” he said.

Ofori Acheampong insisted the teachers must receive their letters signed by the Director General of the Ghana Education Service before they accept postings.

Last week, the Ghana Education Service directed its regional directors to post all newly trained teachers to the various schools across the country, although it had not been given financial clearance.

The memo, signed by the Deputy Director General of the Ghana Education Service said the teachers are not to be issued with appointment letters to that effect, and should also not be allowed entry to the classrooms of their respective schools to teach.

The Director of Public Affairs of the GES, Rev Jonathan Bettey, said that the move was meant to give an assurance to the graduate teachers that they will be employed by government.
