The Electoral Commission is yet to take a definitive action on whether or not to extend the voter transfer exercise at Kukuom in the Asunafo South Constituency of the Brong Ahafo Region.

The exercise was disrupted following clashes in the area.

Confusion broke out last week between supporters of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who accused each other of manipulating the exercise for their gain.

The ensuing clashes led to destruction of some electoral equipment at the offices of the EC necessitating a suspension of the exercise.

But Director of Communications at the EC, Eric Dzakpasu, told Citi News they are awaiting a police report on the incident which will then inform the commission’s next move.

He noted that, the issue has come to their attention and “the commission is making all the necessary arrangements and also with the security to ensure the safety of people.”

“I’m sure that as soon as the arrangements are ready, it would be made known. Apart from getting the equipment ready too, there are security arrangements and implications and we are yet to get the Police investigative report on the whole issue. So immediately, I cannot tell how soon it’s going to be but I hope it wouldn’t take too long,” Dzakpasu added.

The EC’s Director of Communication also added that, they would come out with the necessary modalities after they have been adequately briefed on the matter.

“When all the necessary arrangements are made and all the necessary security precautions are taken then the commission would be able to come out definitely on the modalities for the completion of that exercise in the area,” he added.

We’ll ensure culprits in Kukuom clashes are arrested

The NPP had earlier said it will ensure that supposed party members who were involved in the clashes are arrested.

NPP parliamentary nominee for the Asunafo South constituency, George Boateng told Citi News they will ensure that persons found culpable are punished.

“If it comes out that they[ NPP supporters] vandalised the offices they will have to go through the law. In the same way those who vandalised the NPP office will also be made to face the law.”
