The Vice President, Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, has commissioned the “Amissah Arthur language centre” at the University of Cape Coast.<\/p>\n
The centre will serve\u00a0the language departments within the faculty of Arts of the school to\u00a0improve the study of languages and produce language experts in the country.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Amissah-Arthur said the facility will go a long way to improve language literacy in the country.<\/p>\n
He called on authorities of the school to ensure\u00a0proper maintenance culture to guarantee the long existence of the centre.<\/p>\n
“While we do this, we also ask the university to help develop a culture that is non-existent in a large measure in our country, a culture of maintenance. I hope that once this thing is done, new and fresh, we will continue to keep it fresh, freshen it as we go along: both the building and the equipment so that the life will be prolonged and many more people will benefit from it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The language centre project which started in 2003 as a GetFund project, was halted due to the\u00a0lack of funds, but was taken over and completed by a collaboration between the Bank of Ghana under the then leadership of Kwesi Amissah Arthur as governor, and the University of Cape Coast in 2011.<\/p>\n
The new centre is expected to house the\u00a0Department of Communication Studies, Department of English, Department of Ghanaian and Linguistics and the Department of French.<\/p>\n
It holds two conference rooms, a lecture theater, one large auditorium, six language laboratories, a number of offices and a restaurant.<\/p>\n
Dignitaries present at the event included, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Prof. D. D. Kuupole, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Nana Sam Brew-Butler, the provost of the college of humanities and legal studies, Prof. Dora Adu Buandoh as well as some senior members from the Bank of Ghana.<\/p>\n
Others included the\u00a0Central Regional Minister, Hon. Kweku Ricketts-Hagan\u00a0and the\u00a0head of the Department of Communication Studies,\u00a0Dr. Eric Opoku Mensah.<\/p>\n
