{"id":248309,"date":"2016-09-15T06:00:01","date_gmt":"2016-09-15T06:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=248309"},"modified":"2016-09-15T06:00:01","modified_gmt":"2016-09-15T06:00:01","slug":"afriyie-akoto-blasts-mahama-for-misinformation-on-cocoa-coffee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/09\/afriyie-akoto-blasts-mahama-for-misinformation-on-cocoa-coffee\/","title":{"rendered":"Afriyie Akoto blasts Mahama for misinformation on cocoa, coffee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0Minority Spokesperson on Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has rubbished President John Mahama\u2019s claim that the cocoa industry is thriving.<\/p>\n<p>The New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP said he was left dumbfounded by President Mahama\u2019s claims during the presentation of\u00a0highlights of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto, saying \u201cI just couldn\u2019t believe what I heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoesn\u2019t he realise that in the last four or five years, the volume of exports of cocoa has been going down and he says cocoa production is up,\u201d\u00a0Dr. Afriyie Akoto retorted, adding that\u00a0President Mahama did not understand the cocoa industry.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/jd-mahama-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-248094\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/jd-mahama-3.jpg\" alt=\"jd-mahama-3\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo all the crisis in the cocoa industry with farmers complaining about the fact that they don\u2019t have inputs to work with and that the producer prices are inadequate for their needs, he hasn\u2019t heard?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Afriyie Akoto maintained that, cocoa production wasn\u2019t going the way that President Mahama wanted Ghanaians to think whilst cautioning the President to be careful about the figures he throws around about the cocoa sector.<\/p>\n<p><b>Outrageous<\/b><strong>\u00a0coffee targets<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Afriyie Akoto also took issues with the President\u2019s targets\u00a0for the coffee industry.\u00a0During his presentation on Tuesday, President Mahama said free coffee seedlings would be provided to all interested farmers.<\/p>\n<p>He further said 4 million of these seedlings were already being nursed and 6,000 metric tons of coffee are currently being produced in Ghana.<\/p>\n<p>The point that vexed the MP the most, was the pledge to increase the volume of coffee production to 100,000 metric tonnes as a result of this policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn other areas, he made outrageous targets for coffee; that we are going to produce a 100,000 metric tonnes of coffee. Where is the President getting these figures from\u2026? We are only doing 3000 to 4000 metric tonnes of coffee export in this country,\u201d Dr. Afriyie Akoto said.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that, \u201cyou need at least 200, 000 hectares to be cultivated over 4, 5, 6 years and in that period you have to spend about 10 thousand dollars per hectare and we are talking about $2 billion which is equivalent to something like GHc 10 billion in the next 4, 5 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Dr. Afriyie Akoto&#8217;s view, President Mahama&#8217;s manifesto highlights presentation only &#8220;confirms what we have always been saying that, the NDC administration is big on rhetoric and propaganda and very little on what is actually happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Delali Adogla-Bessa\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0Minority Spokesperson on Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has rubbished President John Mahama\u2019s claim that the cocoa industry is thriving.
