Former Information Minister under the Kufuor administration, Stephen Asamoah-Boateng says he is grateful for the existence of rule of law following his discharge and acquittal by the Accra High Court.

Mr. Asamoah-Boateng, his wife, Zuleika Lorwia and six others including a former deputy Information Minister in the same administration, Frank Agyekum were charged with conspiracy to defraud the state in 2009.

The charges were in relation to a contract awarded to Mr Asamaoh-Boateng’s sister-in-law for some renovation works at the Information Ministry during his tenure of office as sector Minister.

The charges included contravention of the public procurement act and conspiracy.

But the Accra High Court discharged and acquitted the former Minister and his wife.

However, Frank Agyekum has been ordered by the court to open his defense for the case.

Speaking on Eyewitness News, Mr. Asamoah-Boateng said: “It is true…I kept on saying that God is on my side in everything I do.”

He dismissed reports that the said contract was awarded to his sister in-law saying, “there was no contract awarded to my sister in-law. It is my sister in-law who owned the company but she didn’t get any contract.”

The former Information Minister stated that the existence of rule of law made it possible for the court to decide the case.

He thanked his lawyers and his wife for believing in him and standing by him throughout the five-year case.

Regarding Mr. Agyekum, Asamoah-Boateng explained “I don’t know how that happened but he has his counsel…and I believe they have a legal way of going about it.”
