{"id":246152,"date":"2016-09-06T13:49:12","date_gmt":"2016-09-06T13:49:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=246152"},"modified":"2016-09-06T13:49:12","modified_gmt":"2016-09-06T13:49:12","slug":"labour-agitations-in-power-sector-to-affect-fdis-dr-wereko-brobby","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/09\/labour-agitations-in-power-sector-to-affect-fdis-dr-wereko-brobby\/","title":{"rendered":"Labour agitations in power sector to affect FDIs \u2013 Dr. Wereko Brobby"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A former Chief Executive Officer of the Volta River Authority (VRA), Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby, has told <strong>Citi Business News<\/strong> the recent labour agitations in the power sector will affect Foreign Direct Investments into the country.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;XlDuJEEwkfWgJMYdkWSPVBrPNthDH2kW&#8221;]He argues that the growing labour unrest demonstrates the lack of discipline and respect for law in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not know about the long term effect; all I know is that it is wrong, as it sends a wrong signal to anyone who wants to come to invest in the power sector or any other sector of the economy as there is no discipline among both workers and management,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>Workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have embarked on a series of protests over <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/08\/31\/ecg-privatization-wont-lead-to-lay-offs-mida\/\" target=\"_blank\">possible job losses<\/a><\/strong><\/span> due to the ceding of part of management to a private entity.<\/p>\n<p>The latest involved the<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong> <a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/09\/05\/ecg-workers-sit-down-strike-enters-day-two-today\/\" target=\"_blank\">two day sit down strike<\/a><\/strong><\/span> which ended Monday, September 5, 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Though the ECG workers have been assured of job security at least within the first five years of the Millennium Challenge Compact (MCC) agreement, they are adamant that they will be eventually laid off with a new management.<\/p>\n<p>Also, workers of the VRA have among other things demanded that the <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/08\/24\/vra-staff-want-ceo-fired-over-plans-to-cede-t3-plant-to-ameri\/\" target=\"_blank\">company\u2019s CEO be sacked<\/a> <\/strong><\/span>as they have questioned his management style.<\/p>\n<p>According to the workers, the management of VRA has failed to protect the interest and survival of the authority in the attempted takeover of the MRP Plant, Kpone Thermal Power Plant (KTTP) Land, and the T3 Plant which they describe as key assets of the Authority.<\/p>\n<p>But Dr. Wereko Brobby believes the respective managements of the ECG and VRA must\u00a0step up their mandates to address what he describes as anarchy at the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of us are not happy about what is happening in terms of the MIDA arrangement but those who have the responsibility must deal with it. This is anarchy in the work place and it shouldn\u2019t have been allowed to happen,\u201d the former VRA boss stressed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sack \u2018striking\u2019 workers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile Dr. Wereko-Brobby maintains that the management of the ECG must take disciplinary measures against the workers involved in the agitations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not government that should be responsible; there are Managing Directors and Boards of Directors for the company and they\u00a0must take action,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, sacking the affected workers will also be an option if need be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are procedures in taking disciplinary action if it entails sacking, so be it, but I think we must stop this state of anarchy in our state enterprises and public institutions since it doesn\u2019t do this country any good,\u201d Dr. Wereko-Brobby added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Pius Amihere Eduku\/citibusinessnews.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A former Chief Executive Officer of the Volta River Authority (VRA), Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby, has told Citi Business News the recent labour agitations in the power sector will affect Foreign Direct Investments into the country.
