{"id":245612,"date":"2016-09-04T11:57:08","date_gmt":"2016-09-04T11:57:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=245612"},"modified":"2016-09-04T11:57:08","modified_gmt":"2016-09-04T11:57:08","slug":"mother-teresa-declared-a-saint-by-pope-francis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/09\/mother-teresa-declared-a-saint-by-pope-francis\/","title":{"rendered":"Mother Teresa declared a saint by Pope Francis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hundreds of thousands of people have gathered in St Peter\u2019s Square in the Vatican to witness the canonisation of Mother Teresa, the Catholic icon revered around the world for her work with the poor and dying.<\/p>\n<p>The canonisation mass, led by Pope Francis, took place under a huge portrait of the Albanian nun, who established the Missionaries of Charity order in Kolkata in 1950. The order now runs 758 homes, hospices and shelters in 139 countries around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Nuns \u2013 some wearing the distinctive blue and white robes of Mother Teresa\u2019s order \u2013 priests, pilgrims and tourists crammed into the square in front of St Peter\u2019s Basilica for the two-hour ceremony.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element--thumbnail element-rich-link--upgraded\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-1 | 1\">\n<div class=\"rich-link tone-feature--item \"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Police officers and volunteers in yellow tabards and baseball caps marshalled the crowds between crash barriers, and Red Cross workers handed out bottles of water. Photograph: Angelo Carconi\/EPA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In his homily, Francis described Mother Teresa as an \u201cemblematic figure of womanhood\u201d and a \u201ctireless worker for mercy\u201d. He told the crowd: \u201cMay she be your model of holiness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an unscripted comment, he added that many people would have difficulty in referring to her as Saint Teresa. \u201cI think we\u2019ll carry on calling her Mother Teresa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In India, a special mass was celebrated at the Missionaries of Charity.<\/p>\n<p>Among the crowds in Rome was Paul Spiteri, 69, who had travelled from Malta for the ceremony. Handing out Mother Teresa prayer cards, he said he had met the nun four times and was thrilled to witness her being made a saint. \u201cThis is a very special moment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Shamini Chakupurayil, 19, from Kerala, said Indian Catholics were especially proud of Mother Teresa\u2019s life and work. \u201cThis is the best day of my life,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Holding his seven-month old daughter Georgiana under the shade of an umbrella, Francis Gojcaj, an American of Albanian heritage, said Mother Teresa had \u201cgiven her whole life to the poor. Photograph: Vincenzo Pinto\/AFP\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But the canonisation also reignited criticism of the Missionaries of Charity, which detractors claim focused on the elevation rather than the relief of suffering.<\/p>\n<p>Critics say inadequate medical care given to sick and dying people was negligible. Syringes were reused without sterilisation, pain relief was non-existent or inadequate, and conditions were unhygienic. Meanwhile, Mother Teresa spent much of her time travelling around the world in a private plane to meet political leaders.<\/p>\n<div id=\"dfp-ad--im\" class=\"js-ad-slot ad-slot ad-slot--dfp ad-slot--im ad-slot--im ad-slot--rendered\" data-link-name=\"ad slot im\" data-test-id=\"ad-slot-im\" data-name=\"im\" data-mobile=\"1,1|88,85\" data-label=\"false\" data-refresh=\"false\" data-google-query-id=\"COStgrHT9c4CFVQh0wodaqoJGQ\"><\/div>\n<p>Three years ago a study by academics at the University of Montreal concluded that the Vatican had ignored Mother Teresa\u2019s \u201crather dubious way of caring for the sick, her questionable political contacts, her suspicious management of the enormous sums of money she received, and her overly dogmatic views regarding \u2026 abortion, contraception and divorce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mother Teresa, who was born Anjez\u00eb Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in 1910 in what is now Macedonia, was proclaimed a saint almost 19 years to the day after her death in 1997. Conforming with the process of canonisation, two miracles were deemed to have been performed after she died, both involving the alleged cure of terminally ill people.<\/p>\n<p>Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel peace prize in 1979.
