{"id":243970,"date":"2016-08-30T06:00:03","date_gmt":"2016-08-30T06:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=243970"},"modified":"2016-08-30T06:00:03","modified_gmt":"2016-08-30T06:00:03","slug":"water-bodies-to-be-protected-against-pollution-by-illegal-miners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/08\/water-bodies-to-be-protected-against-pollution-by-illegal-miners\/","title":{"rendered":"Water bodies to be protected against pollution by illegal miners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Water Resources Commission (WRC) has proposed the introduction of permanent security to guard some of the country\u2019s water bodies to help curb their pollution by illegal miners.<\/p>\n<p>This follows the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/08\/29\/galamsey-could-force-closure-of-3-treatment-dams-ministry\/\">impending closure<\/a><\/strong><\/span> of the Barekese dam, the Kyebi Treatment plant and the Daboase water treatment plant due to the activities of illegal miners.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;TEBPXqdhYufvXF4YuXtOCuyIh5xJKxPb&#8221;]Speaking on the <strong>Citi Breakfast Show<\/strong>, the Executive Secretary at the WRC, Ben Amponsah, said \u201cwith respect to illegal mining, it is now treated as a national security issue and it is the National Security that is given information and they actually undertake the exercises where appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe next strategy that we are trying to adopt is to look at water resources, in term of reservoirs\u2026 that is where we think it is best to introduce permanent security,\u201d Mr. Amponsah added.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission has however admitted that, it will be difficult to provide security for flowing water bodies given the limited control as compared to reservoirs.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Amponsah explained that, \u201cFor rivers that are flowing, it is difficult to put in permanent security because it is flowing and it is quite difficult to put police\u00a0there\u00a0for a river that flows for 80 to 90 kilometers, but where you have a defined reservoir, it is easy to put in permanent security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As far is the security interventions are concerned, the WRC has &#8220;started with Weija and from August 2016, there has been permanent security at Weija including police and soldiers,&#8221; he noted, adding that these measures at Weija have led to a reduction in the levels\u00a0of encroachment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Delali Adogla-Bessa\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Water Resources Commission (WRC) has proposed the introduction of permanent security to guard some of the country\u2019s water bodies to help curb their pollution by illegal miners.
