{"id":240967,"date":"2016-08-19T11:14:13","date_gmt":"2016-08-19T11:14:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=240967"},"modified":"2016-08-19T11:14:13","modified_gmt":"2016-08-19T11:14:13","slug":"bishop-obinims-disgraceful-flogging-violated-constitution-lawyer-sosu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/08\/bishop-obinims-disgraceful-flogging-violated-constitution-lawyer-sosu\/","title":{"rendered":"Obinim&#8217;s &#8216;disgraceful&#8217; flogging violated constitution &#8211; Lawyer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Human rights lawyer, Francis Xavier Sosu, has condemned Bishop Daniel Obinim for publicly whipping of two teenagers, a boy aged 16 and girl a aged 14, in his church\u00a0for alleged fornication.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Sosu described the act as \u201cunacceptable\u201d and \u201cdisgraceful\u201d saying it\u00a0violated Article 15 of Ghana\u2019s constitution which deals with the respect for human dignity.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;tcVZ27a0X4QrXOtSWcKc5A02gCou61cl&#8221;]\u201cIt is completely shocking that we could still have people like Bishop Obinim subjecting our brothers and sisters who are members of his church to such degrading punishment which clearly violates Article 15 of the 1992 constitution,\u201d he said to <strong>Citi News<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The controversial preacher\u2019s conduct made headlines after a video went viral on social media showing the beating which took place before his congregation of hundreds.<\/p>\n<p>The two teenagers are said to be wards of the Bishop and he said he was only disciplining them out of love as the bible commanded.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to critics, Bishop Obinim also described some Ghanaians as\u00a0<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/08\/18\/obinim-speaks-on-flogging-of-fornicators-in-church-audio\/\">hypocrites<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>for judging him saying some of them would have done same and even more.<\/p>\n<p>But Lawyer Sosu stated that \u201cyou cannot bring someone before a congregation bare-chested with a belt and start whipping him in the glare of the congregation on the allegation the he has impregnated somebody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGhana has an obligation to respect and observe all the human rights provisions including the protection of the dignity of its citizens,\u201d he also said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Obinim reported to DOVVSU<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This obligation will be realised as the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, has <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/08\/18\/obinim-dragged-to-dovvsu-for-lashing-fornicators-in-church\/\">filed a complaint<\/a><\/strong><\/span> against bishop Obinim, at the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_233877\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-233877\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/oyeLithur1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-233877\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/oyeLithur1.jpg\" alt=\"Nana Oye-Lithur, Minister for Gender and Social Protection\" width=\"600\" height=\"382\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-233877\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nana Oye-Lithur, Minister for Gender and Social Protection<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A statement from the Gender Minister, Nana Oye Lithur, said that the Ministry \u201chas reported Pastor Obinim of the International Godsway Church to the Accra Regional DOVVSU Office for investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The police has also told\u00a0Citi News\u2019 \u00a0they are\u00a0<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/08\/18\/police-to-investigate-video-of-obinim-flogging-fornicators\/\">looking into the matter<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0which, if confirmed, would constitute a breach of the victims\u2019 rights.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Delali Adogla-Bessa\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Human rights lawyer, Francis Xavier Sosu, has condemned Bishop Daniel Obinim for publicly whipping of two teenagers, a boy aged 16 and girl a aged 14, in his church\u00a0for alleged fornication.
