The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has stated that it is implementing a \u2018Sanitation Rapid Response Scheme\u2019 in the metropolis.<\/p>\n
According to the assembly, this is line with its mission to keep the metropolis clean.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the sanitation scheme on Monday, the Chief Executive of the KMA, Kojo Bonsu, stated that the initiative will reduce the amount of litter created in the city.<\/p>\n
He also revealed that the scheme would bring on board a considerable number of people so as to reduce the rate of unemployment that exists in the locality.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnder this scheme, one hundred and fifty people have been recruited; they have been assigned to the various lorry terminals and vantage points in the metropolis to pick the litter especially plastics,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Mr. Bonsu highlighted that the plastics gathered would be transported to a recycling plant to generate useful material and \u201cI must add that our emphasis will be on plastic waste. Whatever is gathered will be sold to plastic recycling companies as raw material.\u201d<\/p>\n
He also cautioned residents to \u201ccomplement the effort\u201d of the \u2018gangs\u2019 or groups to ensure that the vision of the sanitation scheme is realized.<\/p>\n
The scheme is made up of five \u2018gangs\u2019 or groups that have been designated to clean up the litter that is created at terminals and public places in Kumasi.<\/p>\n
