{"id":233506,"date":"2016-07-22T17:15:04","date_gmt":"2016-07-22T17:15:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=233506"},"modified":"2016-07-22T17:15:04","modified_gmt":"2016-07-22T17:15:04","slug":"gnat-dares-ges-boss-threatens-strike-over-shs-subsidies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/gnat-dares-ges-boss-threatens-strike-over-shs-subsidies\/","title":{"rendered":"GNAT dares GES boss, threatens strike over SHS subsidies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), has hinted that they might declare a nationwide strike in September 2016, if the subsidy arrears of the various second-cycle institutions are not paid.<\/p>\n<p>The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools\u00a0(CHASS), earlier this week, issued a threat to <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/20\/chass-to-shutdown-schools-over-unpaid-subsidies\/\"><strong>close down Senior High Schools<\/strong><\/a><\/span> (SHS) nationwide following delays by the government in paying the subsidies.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;4Hx0vB6oMPLiGJBc6ROiBw63o5j5xROp&#8221;]According to the\u00a0General Secretary of GNAT, David Ofori Acheampong, although it is unfortunate they would have to close down the schools over unpaid subsidies, it is also necessary to ensure the schools get the resources they need to run.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019ve gone past the era where we should be embarking on nationwide strikes because of salary. If the kind of logistics that we need to perform \u00a0our jobs efficiently are denied us, why should we sit in the classroom. We are daring\u00a0them that we are going to meet them and put up our statement. We are daring\u00a0the Director General of the GES that if it comes to September and these things are not available to the schools, we\u2019ll fully support them [CHASS] as an association,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_233083\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-233083\" style=\"width: 539px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/mr.-jacob-kor.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-233083\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/mr.-jacob-kor.jpg\" alt=\"Director General of GES, Jacob Kor\" width=\"539\" height=\"392\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-233083\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Director General of GES, Jacob Kor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>GES to punish heads if&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Ghana Education Service (GES), at a press conference in response to CHASS&#8217; claims, blamed non-payment of the government subsidies to public Senior High schools on the late submission of students\u2019 data by headteachers, to enable the processing of the grants.<\/p>\n<p>According to the GES, school heads are required to present students\u2019 data on time to help fast-track the processing of the grants and subsidies.<\/p>\n<p>The Director General of GES, Jacob Kor, said at the press conference\u00a0that\u00a0\u201cthe untimely release of subsidies and grants is partly due to the <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/21\/ges-boss-threatens-to-punish-shs-heads-over-subsidies\/\"><strong>lackadaisical attitudes<\/strong><\/a><\/span> of some of the heads in terms of the submission of data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have the list of schools that have not submitted data for the data we are processing now. How do we process some and leave others. I will query all those heads who as at now have not submitted the data for the processing of the subsidy,\u201d Mr. Kor said<\/p>\n<p>However, GNAT has criticized the GES Director for his comments stating that the headteachers had every right to go public with their situation if it wasn&#8217;t being addressed.<\/p>\n<p>David Ofori Acheampong believes the GES should have met with the headteachers to find an solution to the issue instead of attempting to counter the claims in the media.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The response of the Director General is unfortunate. When there are problems and the problems are not being resolved, the only avenue is to bring it to the court of public opinion that these are the challenges that confront us and therefore if nothing is done about it, we are unable to carry out our responsibilities as expected of us. I believe it should have created a platform for the Director General to have met them to see the way forward,&#8221; he told <strong>Citi News<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To issue threats and say the teachers are irresponsible is completely unacceptable. Who doesn&#8217;t \u2019now that the district education office which the Director General himself superintends are so badly resourced to the extent that most of the district directors go to the secondary schools for A4 paper to do their official work.
