{"id":231764,"date":"2016-07-17T12:47:32","date_gmt":"2016-07-17T12:47:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=231764"},"modified":"2016-07-17T12:47:32","modified_gmt":"2016-07-17T12:47:32","slug":"india-students-drown-during-river-selfie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/india-students-drown-during-river-selfie\/","title":{"rendered":"India students drown during river selfie"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"story-body\">\n<div class=\"story-body__inner\">\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Two students have drowned while taking selfies in a swelling river in a remote part of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.<\/p>\n<p>Indian media reported that the accident happened while local students were picnicking on the banks of the Kosi river in Rampur district.<\/p>\n<p>A police official said a group of boys went into the river and two ventured too far into deep water.<\/p>\n<p>Several people have died in India while taking selfies over the last year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A group of students were bathing in the swollen river,&#8221; Police inspector Kushalveer Singh told the BBC.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Two decided to go deeper into the river to get a better selfie, but they lost their balance and drowned.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/0CE2\/production\/_90389230_gettyimages-82580246.jpg\" alt=\"File photo: The Kosi river flooding railway tracks near Madhepura district, India\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>The rescuers took more than an hour to retrieve the bodies of the victims, he added.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve other teenagers who had been bathing were reported safe.<\/p>\n<p>Eyewitnesses speaking to local media said the boys appeared to have been caught unaware by a surge of water that could have been released from a nearby dam.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year police in Mumbai declared 15 locations in the cities as places where taking selfies &#8220;can be dangerous&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The move followed the death of an 18-year-old girl who drowned in the sea while taking a picture.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, authorities also imposed a &#8220;no selfie zone&#8221; at a Hindu festival due to fears they could cause stampedes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption body-width\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"share share--lightweight show ghost-column\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two students have drowned while taking selfies in a swelling river in a remote part of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
