President John Mahama has ordered the Ministry of Finance to release funds for the immediate construction of a drainage system in flood prone areas in the capital.<\/p>\n
He made this known when he visited areas which were affected by Thursday\u2019s floods in Accra which left hundreds of people\u00a0stranded and frustrated.<\/p>\n
The President therefore, visited the areas to assess the extent of damage to property and lives including\u00a0Mallam and South Odorkor areas.<\/p>\n
President Mahama during his visit, sympathized with the flood victims\u00a0and emphasized the need for a drainage system to be constructed .<\/p>\n
\u201cI have directed that the Conti project be signed as soon as possible because that will give us \u00a0some relief. The Conti project will work on some of the streams and the drains and then also give more capacity for garbage collection an also dredge the Korle Lagoon,\u201d the President said.<\/span><\/p>\n He urged the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to embark on an\u00a0extensive public education to aid behavioural change towards waste management practices.<\/p>\n Offering a solution to the problem, the\u00a0 President advised residents living in flood prone areas to take the initiative to develop positive waste management practices saying, “i<\/span>f the rain water doesn’t have an open cause to be able to go into the sea, it will flood city\u2026even after we have done the Conti project, if we don\u2019t change our attitudes, we will continue to have this problem.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n By: Marian Efe Ansah\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n
