two weeks ago<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/a>\u00a0inspected work on the 1,500 housing units at Ningo.<\/p>\nThe inauguration constituted the first phase of the project which is expected to produce 5,000 housing units for low and middle income earners in the country.<\/p>\n
There have been fears that the houses may be sold out to government officials and their cronies since they have the purchasing power than most of the middle income earners\u00a0who are the target of the project.<\/p>\n
Speaking to Citi News<\/strong>, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Abraham Otabil, said government is committed to ensuring that processes that lead to the purchase of the houses are<\/p>\n\u201cDemand for housing units is on the increase. It\u2019s gone so far and the Ministry on a daily basis receives a number of requests from many prospective buyers. To say the least on a weekly basis, about 700 people express interest in occupying these facilities and I can tell you that on a daily basis not less than 50 people visit the Ministry in search of these affordable housing projects so it clearly indicates that there is a high demand for the affordable housing project. As we speak, a committee is in place and they will come out with agreed prices on the pricing level and as soon as this is done, it will be made known to the public.\u201d<\/p>\n
President Mahama cut sod for the project in 2013, when he said the construction was aimed at halving Ghana\u2019s 1.7 million housing deficit by 2016.<\/p>\n
