Alhassan Gbanzaba Memorial School in the Sagnarigu district of the Northern Region has reaffirmed its loyalty to encourage girl child education.

This was demonstrated at the school’s 16th Speech and Prize Giving Day held in Tamale where 98% of the deserving awardees were girls.

The awardees from nursery to Junior High stages received certificates, learning materials and other goodies for their outstanding performances in the various disciplines.

[contextly_sidebar id=”sE1bLKyLYzkdMGESzqzNbFOyRyWEi7dH”]As the Guest of Honour, a former Vice Chancellor of the University for Development Studies (UDS), Professor Haruna Yakubu called for a stronger Public-Private-Partnership in the education sector.

“The government alone cannot provide education for all. The support of private sector by partnering with government to provide quality education is always welcome.”

He pleaded with central government through Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to support needy but brilliant pupils in private schools.

“I call on government to consider supporting the private basic schools by providing libraries for them. The Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies should look how to subsidize the fees paid by providing scholarships for the children.”

Professor Haruna Yakubu admitted that education is a huge investment but encouraged parents to empower their children through circular education.

"ba529b5f-bd3d-4946-8c8f-b75ccfa35b7b"

“Whereas the government cannot afford to subsidize the cost of education at the public schools, it is relatively very difficult for private schools to do same. It is therefore more expensive to educate children at the private schools than public schools,” he observed.

“Parents should not only be interested in paying school fees but also should take the education of their children seriously by monitoring the performance of their children both at school and at home,” he challenged them.

Professor Haruna Yakubu commended the school’s management and staff for their devoted service.

“I applaud the Proprietor, Director, Teaching and non-teaching staff for your dedicated service. The school’s current stature as best in the BECE in the three Northern Regions over the past few years attests to the sacrifices made by staff.”

He therefore advocated better remuneration to enable the teachers stay focused.

“The PTA should entreat their members to pay school fees on time. This will enable the school management to also pay the staff on time.”

He further advised the pupils to be disciplined saying, “You need to be disciplined and by being disciplined, you have to listen to your teachers, parents, study constantly, be respectful, do not tell lies and do not run away from school.”

The school’s Proprietor, Mrs. Jane Alhassan said sanitation remained management’s topmost priority.

She admonished parents and guardians to inculcate self-confidence in their children.

She thanked all whose continues support has made the school remained unbeatable on the league table of the Basic Education Examination Certificate (BECE) in the Northern Region.

Mrs. Jane Alhassan eulogized her late husband, Roland Issifu Alhassan for his encouragement and unflinching support during the turbulent days of the school’s establishment in their private residence garage in 1968.

Northern Regional Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Alhaji Mohammed Haroun Cambodia said the school is worthy of praise for producing the best BECE results.

He declared zero tolerance for truancy, lateness and teacher absenteeism which according to him has gained notoriety in most public schools.

He inspired the management and teachers to strengthen their hard work.

Alhaji Haroun Cambodia on behalf of the Member of Parliament for Sagnarigu constituency, Hon. Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini pledged 150 dual desks for the school.

The school’s cultural ensemble thrilled the guests with variety of local entertainment including Tora, Kpalongo, Baamaya and Chorography dance.

Some of the parents told Citi News they have not regretted enrolling their children there.

The school was established as a Kindergarten in 1968 in memory of the late Edmund Alhassan alias Gbanzaba who emerged as the first university graduate from the three regions of the north.
