The Komenda Sugar Factory has been closed down as scheduled, barely a month after President John Dramani Mahama commissioned it on May, 30.<\/p>\n
There were reports that the factory shutdown resulted from worker agitations over unpaid wages, but the Trade Ministry has refuted such claims.<\/p>\n

Citi News\u2019\u00a0<\/strong>checks by correspondent, Akwasi Koranteng, showed that the $35 million factory is currently inactive.<\/p>\n Demonstrations did not cause shutdown<\/strong><\/p>\n The Public Relations Officer of the Trade Ministry, Nana Akrasi-Sarpong, confirmed the closure to Citi News<\/strong> but he disputed information to the effect that the closure was as a result of worker agitations.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n According to him, \u201cIt wasn\u2019t any demonstration. I have told you, in my press statement, I did indicate the factory will be closed because of sugar cane. I am not aware that it is because of a demonstration.\u201d<\/p>\n Mr.\u00a0Akrasi-Sarpong\u00a0explained further that, sugar factories did not work all year round noting that \u201ceven Brazil and some other countries, sugar factories work for a period of time. They don\u2019t work throughout the year.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n He however said the factory \u201cwill resume full operations in October 2016.\u201d<\/p>\n Government has been heavily criticized\u00a0for hurriedly opening the factory <\/a><\/strong><\/span>merely for political expediency in an election year, despite being aware that the raw material needed for production, sugar cane, is not available.<\/p>\n Gov\u2019t doesn\u2019t have skills to run sugar factory \u2013 Nduom<\/strong><\/p>\n Founder and leader of\u00a0the Progressive People\u2019s Party (PPP), Dr.\u00a0Paa Kwesi Ndoum, has suggested that\u00a0President John Dramani Mahama and his administration lack the required capacity <\/a><\/strong><\/span>to\u00a0effectively run a business such as the Komenda Sugar Factory.<\/p>\n The renowned entrepreneur, who has criticized what he calls the hasty opening of the \u00a0recently Komenda Sugar Factory, questioned the rationale behind government\u2019s decision to among others borrow money to start running the factory, aside the challenge of lacking the raw material to power it.<\/p>\n He says the decision to\u00a0borrow all the money needed as startup capital for the factory, breaches the rules of entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n –<\/p>\n By: Delali Adogla-Bessa\/citifminline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" The Komenda Sugar Factory has been closed down as scheduled, barely a month after President John Dramani Mahama commissioned it on May, 30.
