{"id":223881,"date":"2016-06-20T13:47:41","date_gmt":"2016-06-20T13:47:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=223881"},"modified":"2016-06-20T13:47:41","modified_gmt":"2016-06-20T13:47:41","slug":"govt-must-come-clear-on-absorption-of-utility-bills-gnups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/06\/govt-must-come-clear-on-absorption-of-utility-bills-gnups\/","title":{"rendered":"Gov&#8217;t must come clear on absorption of utility bills &#8211; GNUPS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Ghana Union of Professional Students (GNUPS), is asking government to clarify its stance on\u00a0absorbing utility cost for the various tertiary institutions across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, government announced a policy to absorb utility bills for tertiary institutions, but reports indicate that some of the institutions transfer the cost\u00a0to students.<\/p>\n<p>Students in some of the tertiary institutions say the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), is still billing them despite government\u2019s intervention.<\/p>\n<p>They claim they have so far received bills totaling Ghc200 from the PURC.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <strong>Citi News<\/strong>, the President of GNUPS, Elorm Mawuli Kwawu, called on government to come clear on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been receiving some concerns from students with regards to the bill that we have been given ahead of next semester. I can say that there are some agitations that are looming already. What we have told the\u00a0students is to remain calm, patient and resolute because we are committed to resolving these issues.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are expecting government to come out immediately to state their stance clearly. That is our problem. You cannot say you will bear the cost, then on the other hand, these heads of institutions are charging the student. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) keeps harassing them and they cannot close down the school.
