{"id":223457,"date":"2016-06-18T15:30:03","date_gmt":"2016-06-18T15:30:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=223457"},"modified":"2016-06-18T15:30:03","modified_gmt":"2016-06-18T15:30:03","slug":"regent-university-head-calls-for-govt-funding-of-private-universities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/06\/regent-university-head-calls-for-govt-funding-of-private-universities\/","title":{"rendered":"Regent University head calls for Gov&#8217;t funding of private universities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President of the Regent University College of Science and Technology, Professor Emmanuel Kingsley Larbi has reiterated the call on government to support the funding of private universities in the country.<\/p>\n<p>He contended\u00a0that private universities have churned out the needed human resource for various sectors of the economy and thus should be deserving of such support.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-223478\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/acf30b78-39ca-4ff5-a8f4-1eb14d17e52d.jpg\" alt=\"acf30b78-39ca-4ff5-a8f4-1eb14d17e52d\" width=\"602\" height=\"401\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Addressing a gathering at the inaugural ceremony of the 10th anniversary of the Regent University College in Accra today [Saturday], Professor Larbi also demanded the establishment of a special arrangement\u00a0that will help address the financial needs of private universities.<\/p>\n<p>He lamented the fact private universities had to compete with other profit making entities for loans.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-223477\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/1a324e82-de54-45e2-93f1-fcb05b891e79.jpg\" alt=\"1a324e82-de54-45e2-93f1-fcb05b891e79\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to Prof. Larbi, \u201cThe private universities competing with the profit making entities for loans for infrastructure development, it doesn\u2019t help.\u00a0If for instance, it is able to initiate processes that will allow the GET fund [Ghana Education Trust fund] to give soft loans to the private universities or SNITT [Social Security and National Insurance Trust].\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-223476\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/5b49ad39-afd5-44c4-9b8b-cb3dce7af6b8.jpg\" alt=\"5b49ad39-afd5-44c4-9b8b-cb3dce7af6b8\" width=\"599\" height=\"399\" \/><\/p>\n<p>He suggested further that \u201cthere should be a special bank specializing in giving loans to private universities or private educational institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can get money from GET fund, we can get money from SNITT, we can get money from the 17.5 percent of VAT,\u201d he added, as other sources of funding for private universities,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Kojo Agyeman\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President of the Regent University College of Science and Technology, Professor Emmanuel Kingsley Larbi has reiterated the call on government to support the funding of private universities in the country.
