The 2016 Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has reiterated his resolve to reduce utility tariffs if elected President in the November elections.

His promise comes at a time when businesses and individuals are complaining about the high cost of electricity tariffs, forcing the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to call for a suspension of the Electricity Company of Ghana’s new billing software.

[contextly_sidebar id=”gPDpJCBidPII5SmTj6YpdNZ32GCqJVEC”]The PURC late last year sanctioned an increase of 59.2 percent and 67.2 percent for electricity and water tariffs respectively but businesses and individuals have since expressed anger over the increment, describing it as astronomical and unreasonable.

There have been protests in June over the rates consumers were supposed to pay. Many Ghanaians claimed they had been over-billed by the company.

Speaking at Chorkor Tea Garden as part of his Greater Accra regional tour, Nana Addo said Ghanaians can no longer bear the high cost of electricity especially with all the billing irregularities.

“Everywhere I have been to, I have spoken to people about the cost of prepaid electricity. By the grace of God if I am elected President of Ghana I will reduce electricity and water tariffs. Yes I can do it. Secondary and Senior High School education will also be free,” he said.

Nana Addo is expected to take his regional tour to Central region today beginning with a visit to the Awutu Senya West Constituency.
