The Apple Music executive doesn\u2019t have nearly the same name recognition as the senior executives, from Eddy Cue to Craig Fedirighi, who shuffled on to\u00a0the stage at the annual developer conference on Monday.<\/p>\n
But Saint John\u00a0quickly turned heads during her appearance at the event, and not just because she got Apple\u2019s audience to\u00a0rap along to Sugar Hill Gang\u2019s \u201cRapper\u2019s Delight.\u201d\u00a0Even if the audience filled with tech developers wouldn\u2019t sing aloud as loudly as \u201cBoz\u201d wanted, her\u00a0enthusiasm was infectious.<\/p>\n
Twitter instantly lit up, some people even tweeting\u00a0that she should be the next CEO.\u00a0Buzzfeed crowned her \u201cthe coolest person to ever go onstage at an Apple event\u201d.<\/p>\n
To her friends though, it\u2019s not surprise that the Apple exec would captivate the crowds.<\/p>\n
\u201cBoz is a fierce woman in consumer tech and is making waves at\u00a0Apple,\u201d said Anjula Ancharia-Bath, a partner at Trinity Ventures partner and friend of Saint John\u2019s. \u201cThis was her moment to shine.\u201d<\/p>\n
Saint John ended up at Apple thanks to its acquisition of Beats\u00a0Music \u2014 a move that she hadn\u2019t originally seen coming. She joined only three months before Beats sold to Apple, but\u00a0has taken the reins as the head of global consumer marketing for both Apple Music and iTunes.<\/p>\n
Her path to get to the Apple stage wasn\u2019t easy. Born to Ghanaian parents, Saint John moved with her family to Colorado Springs when she was 14. Her father\u2019s journey from joining the Ghanaian army as a clarinet player\u00a0to graduating from college in the US\u00a0continues to be her biggest inspiration to this day, she says.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople who would have seen him on paper would have said he would never achieve,\u201d Saint John said in a keynote at First Graduate this May.<\/p>\n
Saint John also went to\u00a0Wesleyan University and spent a few years after graduation at ad agency SpikeDDB. Then, Saint John\u2019s career took her to Pepsi for nearly a decade, with\u00a0a quick stint at fashion brand Ashley Stewart.<\/p>\n
Pepsi, though, was where Saint John\u00a0made a name for herself in music circles. She ran its music and entertainment marketing group, a division that she practically invented herself, after she suggested Pepsi start sponsoring music festivals and award shows.<\/p>\n
It was in that role at Pepsi that Saint John\u00a0met Ancharia-Bath, who also manages\u00a0\u201cQuantico\u201d TV star Priyanka Chopra.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe was a force of nature and in all seriousness I was blown away with her in our very first meeting,\u201d Ancharia-Bath said. \u201cShe inspires me everyday with her fearless nature.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her passion for music led her\u00a0to move across the country from New York to Los Angeles to oversee\u00a0marketing for Beats Music. Jimmy Iovine picked her personally from Pepsi, Ancharia-Bath said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd if there is one person who knows talent it\u2019s him. She champions global talent and has a unique perspective.\u201dAncharia-Bath said. \u201cShe\u2019s willing to take risks and share her opinions no matter how controversial they may be at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n
Now that it\u2019s an Apple-owned company, Saint John splits her time between Cupertino and Los Angeles, flying back-and-forth multiple times a week. Apple Music launched in June 2015,\u00a0but Saint John\u2019s time on stage was to highlight how the company has now rebuilt it from the ground up. That includes extra effects like lyrics, which she wanted to get the crowd to sing along too. She closed it out by playing Ghanian music, in a nod to her family background.<\/p>\n
Her passion though was what captured the crowd and the attendees at WWDC.\u00a0As for whether she could be the next Apple CEO, Ancharia-Bath doesn\u2019t doubt Saint John could be anything she wants to be.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe is a strong female leader who is no doubt going to go on to amazing things across tech. \u00a0She is one of the few people that truly understand tech and pop culture and that will take her a long way,\u201d Ancharia-Bath said.<\/p>\n
