Nurses at the Accra Psychiatrist Hospital \u00a0have given the management a one week ultimatum to pay them their nine months\u2019 salary arrears,\u00a0 or risk a strike action.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are giving our Management one week ultimatum to pay us our nine months arrears,\u00a0 or we will lay down our tools,\u201d the nurses told the GNA in an interview on Monday.<\/p>\n
The staff nurses said they had not been paid since they started working on September 2,\u00a0 2013,\u00a0 and claimed there was the rumour\u00a0 that government would only pay them only three months instead of the nine months.<\/p>\n
The nurses said they were still at work because of the assurance by\u00a0 Management\u00a0 to help address their plight.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are still keeping our fingers crossed to see whether the assurances given us will materialize,\u201d they added<\/p>\n
Chief Psychiatrist of the Hospital, Dr Akwasi Osei\u00a0said there had not been any formal communication from government concerning the issues raised by the nurses,\u00a0 and appealed to government to put the necessary measures in place to prevent any strike action.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf they decide to go home or we release them now,\u00a0 this hospital will collapse as we will be compelled to shut down,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Dr Osei said Management has purchased some essential injectables to help cater for the\u00a0 inmates for the next one month.<\/p>\n
He said following the GHC150,000 the Mental Health Authority recently gave to Management of the hospital to address their\u00a0\u00a0immediate challenges, the Ministry of Health (MOH) had also put in procurements for medicine and also money for the upkeep of the\u00a0 inmates.<\/p>\n
\u201cApart from these two institutions, Breast Care International, an NGO in Kumasi has also provided Accra Psychiatrist Hospital with medications to cater for its inmates,\u201d Dr Osei said.<\/p>\n
