Five persons, including a woman, have been arrested for allegedly lynching a 33-year-old man at Teshie in Accra.<\/p>\n
They had accused the man of stealing fish.<\/p>\n
Emmanuel Gyan, an employee of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, was beaten to death when two people who lived close to his house allegedly claimed that he was a thief.<\/p>\n
They had shouted \u2018thief, thief\u2019 in Ga, an alarm that attracted four more people who beat Gyan until he became unconscious, after which he was left by the roadside.<\/p>\n
Those arrested are Eric Odai, alias Odai Tattoo, a 23-year old driver; Yaw Mintah, 30, a barber; Appiah Mintah, 24, a driver; Ebenezer Nartey, a mobile phone credit card vendor, and Joyce Mensah, 47, a food vendor.<\/p>\n
One other suspect, whose name was given only as Sammy, is currently at large.<\/p>\n
The call of nature<\/strong><\/p>\n The Teshie District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Simon Agbodeka, said the incident occurred about 1:30 p.m. on May 22, 2014.<\/p>\n He said Gyan had, on that day, left his room to attend to the call of nature.<\/p>\n According to him, the food vendor saw Gyan returning to his room and rushed to inform Odai, who lived in the same house as her, that Gyan had stolen smoked fish from the oven of one Rita, a fishmonger who also lived close by.<\/p>\n The two together raised an alarm in Ga, \u2018Julor ee, Julor ee\u2019 (thief, thief) and pounced on Gyan.<\/p>\n \u201cThey subjected him to beatings with sticks and stones, while the four other suspects joined them to beat Gyan until he sustained multiple injuries all over his body and bled profusely,\u201d DSP Agbodeka said.<\/p>\n He said a brother of Gyan\u2019s, whose name has been withheld, heard about the incident and rushed to the scene in an attempt to rescue his brother but he also was beaten by the suspects.<\/p>\n After beating the two brothers, the suspects allegedly dragged Gyan to the road side, close to a vulcanizer\u2019s shop.<\/p>\n Later, some passers-by rushed Gyan to the La General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.<\/p>\n The Teshie District Police Commander said the police, in the course of their investigations, interrogated the fishmonger to find out if some of her fish had been stolen on that day.<\/p>\n \u201cBut the woman said no one had tampered with her wares,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Credit: Daily Graphic<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Five persons, including a woman, have been arrested for allegedly lynching a 33-year-old man at Teshie in Accra.
