The Foods and Drugs Authority (FDA) is warning fishermen in the country against the use of toxic chemicals which is a health threat to humans in fishing.<\/p>\n
This follows reports about fishermen at Lower Axim in the Western Region resorting to the use of toxic chemicals such as DDT and carbide for fishing.<\/p>\n
Head of the Food Industrial Support Services Department of the FDA, Kofi Essel in an interview with Citi News\u00a0stated that his outfit will sanction fishermen who indulge in this practice.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe authorities will deal with those who are embarking on the use of these chemicals to fish accordingly because it is affecting the environment and it is also putting public health at risk,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis should not be encouraged or entertained at all,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
He also advised the public against the consumption of fish with signs such as sunken eyes, broken flesh and discolored bodies.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe fish that is fresh should have bold eyes and brightly-red gills\u201d, Mr. Essel said.<\/p>\n
He also stated that the FDA would intensify its public health education on the consumption and process of fishing in the country.<\/p>\n
