{"id":221002,"date":"2016-06-09T11:20:32","date_gmt":"2016-06-09T11:20:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=221002"},"modified":"2016-06-09T11:20:32","modified_gmt":"2016-06-09T11:20:32","slug":"ex-greda-boss-jailed-2yrs-over-sim-box-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/06\/ex-greda-boss-jailed-2yrs-over-sim-box-fraud\/","title":{"rendered":"Ex-GREDA boss jailed 2yrs over SIM box fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former Chief Executive Officer of \u00a0the Ghana Real Estates Developers Association(GREDA), Dr. Alex Tweneboah, has been sentenced to two years imprisonment for engaging in SIM box fraud.<\/p>\n<p>The court further ordered him to pay a penalty of GHc 24,000.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;H4snUI4KEofHmpxHcgEHKHZ4gsbURnI9&#8243;]Failure to pay the fine would mean that he has to\u00a0serve some additional time in prison.<\/p>\n<p>The court found Dr. Tweneboah guilty of two counts of providing electronic equipment without license and possessing illegal devices with intent to commit crime despite pleading not guilty during the trial.<\/p>\n<p>He, together with five others were arrested by a joint task force which included the National Communications Authority (NCA), and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2015\/01\/26\/former-greda-boss-arrested-for-sim-box-fraud\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>on January 15, 2015<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The task-force seized one SIM box with a 64-slot SIM server, 4G Internet modem, one laptop computer and mini antennas from a residence at Batsona, Manet area.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About SIM Box fraud<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A SIM box fraud is a setup in which fraudsters install SIM boxes with multiple low-cost prepaid SIM cards.<\/p>\n<p>The fraudster then can terminate international calls through local phone numbers in the respective country to make it appear as if the call is a local call.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of revenue that would have hitherto gone to the state is lost through the criminal activity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Police, Subah save Ghana over $77m in SIM box fraud\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In May 2016, a collaboration between Subah info solutions and the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Taskforce on <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/05\/03\/police-subah-save-ghana-over-77m-in-sim-box-fraud-photos\/\">cyber and sim box fraud<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, saved the country over 77 million dollars.<\/p>\n<p>This was revealed by the Director General of Police CID Commissioner Prosper Agblor when he addressed journalists on Tuesday about five recent arrests made by the task-force.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Fred Djabanor\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Chief Executive Officer of \u00a0the Ghana Real Estates Developers Association(GREDA), Dr. Alex Tweneboah, has been sentenced to two years imprisonment for engaging in SIM box fraud.
