The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has appealed to striking Community Health Nurses to go back to work with the assurance that it is working to address their grievances.

The Community Health Nurses Association of Ghana (CHNAG) declared a nationwide strike a week ago because of the decision by the Health Ministry to refer to them as nursing assistants instead of Community Health Nurses after completing their certificate programmes.

[contextly_sidebar id=”y7SUjiqQwt3A0L1NVEOVtdk4MtVmMkJc”]The Community Health Nurses contend that unlike other categories of nurses whose name change led to an upgrade, their name change has downgraded their role in the health sector thus impeding their growth within the system.

They also alleged that they lack the required resources needed for their work, a situation that sometimes forces them to use their own resources.

But the GHS Director General, Dr. Ebenezer Appiah Denkyira, has told Citi News that whilst efforts are being made to address the concerns raised, there is the need for the nurses to return to work.

According to him, “that one is being worked on and a series of meetings have been held on that and the Ministry is doing that one but it will take some time because it is in the law of the regulator.”

Regulator to blame for downgrade

Dr. Denkyira however noted that the regulator responsible for designing the programme, the Health Ministry, classified them as nursing assistants.

“We employ community health nurses and we pay them as such. It is the regulator, the one who designs the programme for their training that has classified training into the nursing assistants.”

He assured the aggrieved nurses that the GHS, as their employers, will continue to refer to them as Community Health Nurses.

“So far as the employer is concerned, we are keeping that name and so far as the employer is concerned, we allow you to upgrade; so they are being addressed.”

Community Health Nurses want road-map

But the President of the Community Health Nurses Association, Esther Bamfo, has said the association will only rescind its decision after the Ghana Health Service has outlined a clear road-map to address their concerns.

She noted that the nurses were upset with health service for not formally sitting with them to hear their concerns.

“We have called for a strike and you have not sat down with us. You have to invite us to the table and then tell us what you want to do for us. We are not happy we are staying at home; but they should give us the road-map that they are going to follow so we will have to call off the strike and not them.”
