Dr. Opoku-Ware Ampomah, the Director of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Unit, Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, has said the world class Intensive Care Unit (ICU) under construction at the Burns Centre will be completed in September.<\/p>\n
He said due to last year\u2019s floods and fire disaster on June 3, the Government, corporate bodies and the public contributed monies and equipment to the Korle-Bu Burns Unit to help improve the level of care.<\/p>\n
[contextly_sidebar id=”3hKRPLIxIKrDhiSAtqWx0xKXeLoIjh1G”]Dr. Ampomah said out of the 16 patients they received after the June 3 disaster, one died due to their inability to access ICU facilities.<\/p>\n
He said the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), last year, gave a grant of one million dollars (GHc3.8 million) to facilitate the construction of the Intensive Care Unit to improve service delivery.<\/p>\n
Dr. Amponsah said the new ICU was expected to be the first in Ghana and West Africa after its completion in September.<\/p>\n
\u201cEnterprise Insurance Group donated equipment and other items valued at 30,000 dollars to the Burns Centre and these donations are expected to enhance treatment of survivors of burns at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital when the new Intensive Care Unit is completed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Dr. Ampomah said the Unit is also considering the training of more experts on plastics and burns in order to bring out a rapid response team who would attend to survivors of burns instantly when called upon.<\/p>\n
He said a military service is the most appropriate service with the ability of search and rescue, and called on them to assist the Fire Service in times of emergencies in order to reduce casualties.<\/p>\n
