The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has expressed disappointment in what they claim is a deliberate attempt by the Ghana Education Service to delay the payment of arrears to teachers.

Commenting on GES decision to begin a field validation exercise before payment, the vice president of NAGRAT, Angel Carbonu said, the union is surprised the GES is deliberately denying them what is rightfully theirs, arguing that a second field validation was a waste of time.

[contextly_sidebar id=”i5r399ZDA5TBTwiFCvCQOYsJbWsaZOMC”]Speaking to Citi News, Angel Carbonu said the “agreement the unions had with government said that all those who have been validated will be paid at the end of June. There was nowhere in the agreement that mandates Ghana Education Service to do any second validation or whatever they call it.”

“I am surprised that they’ve jumped into this issue because they created the problem in the first place. The problem that led to this validation was created by the Ghana Education Service. And we are so shocked and disappointed, for the unions we are stating very clear that we have gone and we have reached our limit.”

Angel Carbonu said if teachers who have been validated are not paid their arrears by the June 30, 2016 “we will advise ourselves.”

Validation of documents suspended

Following claims that a number of the teachers in the country employed by the Ghana Education Service presented fake certificates, the Audit Department and the Controller and Accountant General’s Department, were tasked to validate the documents before payments are made.

But the process was suspended on March 17, 2016

The Head of Compensation at the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Ahinakwa Quarshie, said the break will allow the Audit Department to issue a report on all anomalies that have resulted in the validation exercise.
