{"id":216164,"date":"2016-05-22T09:42:35","date_gmt":"2016-05-22T09:42:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=216164"},"modified":"2016-05-22T09:42:35","modified_gmt":"2016-05-22T09:42:35","slug":"ndc-govt-betraying-nurses-with-new-policy-npp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/05\/ndc-govt-betraying-nurses-with-new-policy-npp\/","title":{"rendered":"NDC gov&#8217;t betraying nurses with new policy &#8211; NPP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said the Mahama-led administration is bent on worsening the plight of nurses and teachers with its harsh employment policies.<\/p>\n<p>Their comment\u00a0follows the Ministry of Health\u2019s decision to allow nurses to seek for employment on their own after their training from next year.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;HS2c68Fr41gyP6bFajIR3SGbdV9uOjUP&#8221;]The sector minister, Alex Segbefia, revealed that the conventional practice\u00a0where the Ghana Health Service automatically employed nurses after they graduated from public training institutions will<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/05\/21\/public-nurses-wont-be-bonded-to-govt-from-2017\/\">\u00a0end in 2017<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to these developments in an interview with <strong>Citi News<\/strong>, the National Youth Organizer\u00a0of the NPP, Sammy Awuku, said the governing National Democratic Congress had neglected its commitment to sectors like Health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are convinced that this government is bent on mass entrenchment and again also dereliction of its duty when it comes to some strategic sectors, for instance, the health sector,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that this new policy that will require nurses to apply for jobs after school is unfair given how specialized the nursing field is.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Awuku noted that the employment prospects of the nurses could be bleak because\u00a0they will find limited employment opportunities owing to the harsh economic conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the private sector, people are not employing these nurses because of the general economic conditions in the country so how then do you ask these people to now go and look for their own jobs. This is a complete betrayal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Public nurses won\u2019t be bonded to Gov\u2019t from 2017<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Health has revealed it will no longer<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/05\/21\/public-nurses-wont-be-bonded-to-govt-from-2017\/\"><strong> bond nurses<\/strong> <\/a><\/span>who receive their training in public health training institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Starting from the 2017\/2018 academic year, new entrant trainee nurses will not be mandated to serve a bond after completion of their training in government funded health training institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Government is on a course to reduce the swelling public sector wage bill in accordance with conditions of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme. This is in spite of government\u2019s claim that the IMF agreement was not going to lead to job cuts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;We are\u00a0creating\u00a0more\u00a0space to absorb nurses&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the contrary,\u00a0President John Dramani Mahama has also\u00a0indicated that his government has <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/04\/28\/were-creating-more-space-to-absorb-nurses-mahama\/\">begun processes<\/a><\/strong><\/span> to absorb more trained\u00a0nurses who have been rendered redundant following a freeze on public sector employment.<\/p>\n<p>According to the President, more health facilities are being built across the country to absorb the numbers that remain unemployed despite completing their training and national service.<\/p>\n<p>The President however failed to give specific timelines as to when the nurses would be employed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are in the process of recruiting nurses. That is nurses who have come out of the training institutions and so that process is ongoing.
