Ten students and a past student were on Friday granted bail by a Kpando Circuit Court to the sum of Ghc30, 000 each after they were charged for their roles in the clashes between students of the Kpando Technical School (Kpantec) and the Kpando Senior High School (Kpasec).

[contextly_sidebar id=”OI3J5w18qh6YTwxyAObt8XXqSMMBC3tI”]Out of the 10 students five were from both schools, with the other being a past student of Kpasec.

The suspects are to reappear in Court on May 27, 2016. They eleven were arraigned before the court, and charged with rioting with weapons according to session 199 of act 29/60 of the criminal code.

A 12th suspect, Obube Promise, is currently at large.

The students were arrested by their teachers and handed over to the police for further investigations.

Presenting the case in court, the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Moses Aziaga, said on the 8thof May 2016, students of Kpando Senior High School were on their premises having an entertainment event to send off the final year students.

According to him, the students decided to be in mufti, but that was opposed by tutor in charge of entertainment, who advised that they put on their school uniforms to enable him spot any intruder. This did not go down well with the students who boycotted the entertainment and took their party from the school to a night club called Apple Pub in the town.

During the outdoor party at the club, some students from Kpando the Technical Institute wanted to take part in the celebration, but they were asked to leave with the help of some town boys.

This infuriated the Kpantech students who run back to their school, ganged up, and went to the premises of the Kpando Senior High School, which is just across the street from them, and decided to vent their spleen on the school’s property.

They destroyed a school bus, the school’s sign post, electrical fittings, security post, fence wall, assistant headmaster’s bungalow, a statue among others, all estimated at around (Twenty Five Thousand, One Hundred and Twelve Ghana Cedis (Ghc 25,112.00).

Some female students of Kpasec, which is a fully mixed school, were wounded and hospitalized after the attack but have since been discharged.

The two rival schools are opposite each other separated by the main Kpando – Accra road.

The fight over everything and anything, and have a long history of intolerance towards each other, and Kpantech, a technical school which has a larger male population, is seen to be the aggressor.

The technical students allegedly use their machine shops to manufacture all kinds of offensive weapons to attack at the slightest provocation.

There is hardly any inter-schools competition that will not end up in violent attacks mostly by students from the Kpando technical institute.

This time around, Citi News’ investigations suggest that aside the Kpantech students being angered by the fact that they were turned away from the party, they were also angered because at the said party, students from Kpansec sang a song which Kpantec said was originated by them.

Security at both schools

The police in Kpando have since the incident boosted vigilance around the area particularly in the nights to prevent further attacks.

For now, there is a semblance of calmness in the area although reports suggest students from both schools may be nursing their wounds for a possible revenge.
