{"id":213540,"date":"2016-05-11T17:13:22","date_gmt":"2016-05-11T17:13:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=213540"},"modified":"2016-05-11T17:13:22","modified_gmt":"2016-05-11T17:13:22","slug":"nca-denies-reports-on-banning-whatsapp-skype-calls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/05\/nca-denies-reports-on-banning-whatsapp-skype-calls\/","title":{"rendered":"NCA  denies reports on banning Whatsapp, skype calls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The National Communications Authority (NCA) has denied reports that it is considering banning over- the- top calls in the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;CfqV9lV0BgDtktYXr0oFy9eNJS0h1WeI&#8221;]The NCA contends that the contents of the press statement it issued on the matter have been taken out of context.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A statement copied to <strong>Citi Business News<\/strong> also indicated that the issue is an emerging trend and needs to be considered carefully by all stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe contents of the release, which were\u00a0meant to inform and encourage discussions on the issue have been taken out of context,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It added, \u201cThe National Communications Authority clarifies that the situation is an emerging trend and needs to be considered carefully by all stakeholders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Ebenezer Asante had\u00a0 called on the NCA to work on regulating OTT calls to stop the increasing loss of revenue suffered by telcos and government.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to him, the telcos are losing more money through\u00a0OTT calls than through SIM BOX fraud.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIn as much as Sim Boxing is illegal and we must all fight very hard to stop it, there is a much bigger issue with over the top calls generated through the internet media. So when you make a whatsapp call you are making the call through the internet and bypassing the traditional channel,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pointing to some measures taken by some countries in the Middle East to stop OTT calls, Mr. Twum Asante suggested that all social media calls be redirected through the traditional channels like it is done in those countries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI think the regulator in our country can also do same.
