Suspected robbers have ransacked the Electoral Commission’s (EC) office in Savelugu in the Northern Region, just a day after the limited voters’ registration exercise ended.

According to the District Officer, John Mensah, the robbers made away with some computers and other gadgets.

[contextly_sidebar id=”AGZ4sZ2P3mmI9UJNOSf5vVbTulnQ8hVt”]He was however quick to point out that documents from the just ended registration exercise are intact.

“We just finished the exercise yesterday [Sunday] and this morning when we came to the office, we realized the office had been broken into and two system units, two monitors, two keyboards and a technician’s laptop had been taken away. The registration documents are however intact. We registered 6, 381 for the ten day period,”Mr. Mensah said.

Violence characterized registration process

Apart from this incident, the registration exercise was characterized by pockets of violence in some regions.

The Parliamentary Candidate for Juaboso in the Western RRegion, Martha Manu, and two others, were allegedly attacked by some four men while monitoring the registration exercise at a polling station in the region.

Extend registration period

While some are worried about pockets of violence that have characterized the exercise, some political party representatives and their agents have called for an extension of the exercise, arguing that a lot of people were disenfranchised due to the limited number of centers.

But the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is kicking against the move , saying persons who wish to be captured on the nation’s electoral roll could visit the district office of the Electoral Commission to do so later.
