{"id":212275,"date":"2016-05-08T06:00:47","date_gmt":"2016-05-08T06:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=212275"},"modified":"2016-05-08T06:00:47","modified_gmt":"2016-05-08T06:00:47","slug":"voters-register-will-be-credible-with-proper-id-system-george-loh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/05\/voters-register-will-be-credible-with-proper-id-system-george-loh\/","title":{"rendered":"Voters&#8217; register will be credible with proper ID system &#8211; George Loh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Constitutional and Legal Affairs,\u00a0George Loh, has said Ghana would have to bolster its national identification system in order for the country to have\u00a0a more credible electoral\u00a0register.<\/p>\n<p>He argued that a system to provide Ghanaians with genuine national identification cards was needed to ensure credible entries into the voters&#8217; register.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;LHOzKlOBKpEowl7ZFuDMn7WKIv0KXqRj&#8221;]His comment is in reaction to the recent Supreme Court judgement\u00a0<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/05\/05\/supreme-court-orders-ec-to-clean-voters-register\/\">ordering the Electoral Commission<\/a><\/strong><\/span> to expunge\u00a0from the voters\u2019 register names of all persons who registered in the 2012 elections, with the National Health Insurance Card as a proof of identity.<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court gave the ruling in\u00a0a case brought before it by a former National Youth Organizer of the People\u2019s National Convention (PNC), Abu Ramadan and one Evans Nimako, who were challenging the credibility of the current register.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on <strong>The Big Issue<\/strong>, Mr. Loh intimated that, although the ruling now means that only Ghanaian Drivers&#8217; Licenses and Passports can be used for registering onto the electoral roll, the register can\u00a0still contain ineligible names because in his view,\u00a0a Ghanaian passport or a drivers\u2019 license does not qualify\u00a0an individual as Ghanaian.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a problem with all the documents that we are even asking for thinking that we are eliminating certain things\u2026 By holding Ghanaian passports doesn\u2019t mean you are a Ghanaian who&#8217;s\u00a0qualified to register. That is my interpretation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He explained that one of the major stumbling blocks to attaining a credible register was the absence of a genuine national identification\u00a0system\u00a0which should be a priority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are real issues. In the absence of a system that will give us a genuine national identification card, we will have these problems.\u00a0For many years, we will not even have a voters\u2019 register that is 70 per cent clean\u2026 we are only dancing around the problem.
