The Director of the Ghana\u00a0 Prisons Service, Madam Matilda Baffour-Awuah\u00a0has said\u00a0 the rejection and stigmatization of ex-convicts by\u00a0 society \u00a0should end to aid their reformation.<\/p>\n
She also stated that ex convicts must be made to feel wanted to prevent them from going back to their bad ways.<\/p>\n
She said this in an address read on her behalf at the dedication of the Saint Martin\u2019s Prison Catholic Church in Kumasi.<\/p>\n
The church,\u00a0 located at the South Suntreso Prison Barracks,\u00a0 is the first of its kind to be established in the country, and its construction was started about nine years ago.<\/p>\n
Officers and men of the service, their families and Catholic faithfuls living near the barracks would worship there.<\/p>\n
Madam Baffour-Awuah said every effort should be made to assist freed-prisoners to lead normal and dignified lives.<\/p>\n
She said the negative perceptions, contempt and hostile attitudes towards them should be avoided,\u00a0 so that they would become become part of\u00a0 society,\u00a0 and resist the temptation of committing crime.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey would need our love, care, affection and support to live within the law.\u201d<\/p>\n
She commended\u00a0 Reverend Father Martin Padi, Ashanti Regional Prisons Chaplain, for spearheading the project<\/p>\n
Emeritus Metropolitan Archbishop of Kumasi, the Most Rev Peter Akwasi Sarpong, in a homily,\u00a0 asked the congregation not to allow the church to remain a mere building,\u00a0 but a true place of worship, where the word of God would be shared to change lives.<\/p>\n
