A group of teachers calling itself Unpaid Teachers and Education workers – Ghana, is pleading with government to pay salaries of its members which have been in arrears for the past two years or face their wrath.

According to the group, they consist of about 3,000 teachers who have been working since 2014 without any compensation.

[contextly_sidebar id=”9co1RezMsqbFywoNxMI7Wg6Uh4K1LL4u”]Speaking to Citi News, the General Secretary of the group, Isaac Amponsah, indicated that government was fully aware their situation.

“Around November, December, the government asked auditors to come on the field to come and check whether we are really on the field working. They came and we provided every document that they needed to assess whether we are working.”

According to them, they were told that the auditors had presented a report to the Finance Ministry for clearance but they still remain without payment some six months after that.

Mr. Amponsah revealed that some teachers have resorted to working as farm laborers for survival.

“We are suffering. All of us are in villages teaching… A teacher has to go and weed for a farmer for 15 cedis before he can make ends meet. Why should this happen in a whole country like Ghana,” he lamented.
