President John Dramani Mahama says he has directed the fast-tracking of processes to allow tertiary institutions to replace aging staff and also recruit new staff.

It would be recalled that the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) had threatened to put pressure on managements of public tertiary institutions to reduce student intakes if government fails to lift the ban on recruitment of essential staff.

[contextly_sidebar id=”fzp9gNYW2bpYTJJJK7yGlIOtapUn8YjK”]Speaking at the University of Cape Coast on Thursday night as part of his “Accounting to the People Tour, President Mahama said he had already directed the fast-tracking of the process.

“I know the issue of replacing aging faculty and fresh recruitments is one of the concerns to you and your colleagues in our universities. I can today announce that I have asked the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Finance to put together a workable programme to fast track recruitments and financial clearance procedures for staff in our institutions. I have also asked that this fast track arrangement covers staff validation process for all GES staff so that all teachers can receive their due beyond the three-month salary regime.”

Develop yourselves into entrepreneurs

President Mahama also encouraged the youth to take advantage of the enabling environment government is creating to develop themselves into becoming entrepreneurs.

He mentioned the GH¢10 million Skill Development Fund which he says has been made available to support youth in various businesses.

The President believes taking advantage of such opportunities will further enhance economic development for the country as a whole.

“I see many entrepreneurs amongst you who will grow small businesses into multi-million dollar business conglomerate in the future and employ people far beyond the expectation of government. I see a nation filled with an energetic, innovating and promising youth ready to take advantage of the rising opportunities that government is generating together with the private sector.

“This is possible because we have navigated the rough terrain and have found ourselves on the path of rising opportunities, entrepreneurship and a changing Ghana. Our country Ghana is changing and the change is occurring in the right direction because it is backed by the implementation of prudent, sound and deliberate policies and programmes which I pledge I continue to lead as President.”
