{"id":211662,"date":"2016-05-05T12:58:39","date_gmt":"2016-05-05T12:58:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=211662"},"modified":"2016-05-05T12:58:39","modified_gmt":"2016-05-05T12:58:39","slug":"usag-threatens-lawsuit-over-limited-registration-exercise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/05\/usag-threatens-lawsuit-over-limited-registration-exercise\/","title":{"rendered":"USAG threatens lawsuit over limited registration exercise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University Students Association of Ghana (USAG), has threatened to drag the Electoral Commission to court if it does not extend the duration of the limited registration exercise to enable more students on university campuses across the country to register.<\/p>\n<p>According to USAG, an extension will prevent students from being \u00a0disenfranchised.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;z384F2ECSAYTktwfX3VlZFaeUtCyUKyu&#8221;]Various stakeholders have expressed concern about the inadequate number of registration centers on the various university campuses.<\/p>\n<p>USAG has\u00a0already indicated that\u00a0<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/contextly.com\/redirect\/?id=2qEu79zEJd:211585:2934:13:::sidebar:572b2b25016ff8-93517077\">less than 10 percent<\/a><\/strong><\/span> of eligible student voters have been able to register, hence their call for the extension.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <strong>Citi News<\/strong>, President of USAG, Henry Nkosuo Boakye said USAG may\u00a0be forced to take the EC to court if the situation persists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would follow the procedures as clearly enshrined in the 1992 constitution of\u00a0Ghana and seek our reliefs. We will head to court. We will file a petition. We will file a petition and make the EC know that they are there to serve our interests and nothing more,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EC <\/strong><strong>disenfranchising eligible students<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>USAG has accused the EC of essentially disenfranchising eligible students with its handling of the registration exercise on the various campuses.<\/p>\n<p>Their comments were echoed by presidential running mate of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia who said <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/05\/05\/ec-practically-disenfranchising-university-students-bawumia\/\">more registration<\/a><\/strong><\/span> centers are required on the various campuses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026And so if we don\u2019t want to disenfranchise people, we need to bring in adequate or a few more registration centers to cater for the population and I think this is what has been missed\u2026 I would\u00a0like to encourage the Electoral Commission to do what is right, to bring in a few more registration centers on Legon campus and anywhere else where this sort of go-slow is pertaining.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Delali Adogla-Bessa\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University Students Association of Ghana (USAG), has threatened to drag the Electoral Commission to court if it does not extend the duration of the limited registration exercise to enable more students on university campuses across the country to register.
