Two other suspected thieves lynched in Wa [Photo Credit: Latif Mahama]

The situation is said to be generating fear among the residents in the region as the youth are now on the lookout for criminals to lynch.

The Acting Upper West Regional Police PRO, ASP Edmond Nyamekye on Eyewitness News condemned the recent increase in mob attacks in the region and indicated his outfit is taking the necessary measures to curb the situation.

He said his Police personnel are embarking on sensitization programmes in communities in the region regarding the dangers of mob action.

The Regional Police PRO described the development as an “embarrassment” to the 1992 constitution “and it is not the best way to go.”

He discounted claims by the residents that the law courts and the Police in the region have failed to arrest and prosecute criminals, hence, their decision to take the law into their own hands.

ASP Nyamekye challenged the Wa residents “to visit the courts and see the number of cases that we present to our courts. Day in day out, criminals…are taken to court.”

“They don’t visit the courts. They only sit somewhere and just make up their mind but that is not the issue [inactive Police and Judiciary] at all.”

He conceded that the wheelof justice is slow but maintained that the action by residents can under no circumstance be justified.

“If your case is being delayed in court or you bring the case to the Police Station and the person is granted bail, that doesn’t mean that you should resort to mob action,” ASP Nyamekye stressed.
