The Central Laboratory of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, has been hit by a severe shortage of essential supplies which is affecting the smooth running of the facility.<\/p>\n
Some of these supplies include Pepton Water, Sheep Blood, and gloves among others.<\/p>\n
When Citi News<\/strong>‘ visited the facility, there were a handful of laboratory technicians and scientists who were working in the various units.<\/p>\n According to some personnel who spoke to Citi News under conditions of anonymity, they had run out of some of the items for a number of days now.<\/p>\n The personnel said although management of the facility has been duly informed, they are yet to address the situation with the excuse that there is no money.<\/p>\n One of the workers lamented that, “At some point we\u00a0had to a form a group to contribute money to buy supplies for reimbursement later \u00a0by the administration but they said that it was illegal and even interdicted some of our senior colleagues over that.\u00a0I have often had to use my own money to buy some of the minor things to carry out procedures.”<\/p>\n In one of the units for instance they had only one small bottle of Sheep Blood left.<\/p>\n According to the personnel in charge there, “a small bottle of Sheep Blood cost about Ghc25, but even this management says they don’t have money”.<\/p>\n In\u00a0another unit, light bulbs have not been functioning\u00a0for over three weeks without replacement.<\/p>\n This will mean personnel can’t work at night should be there be the need to carry out some emergency procedures at night.<\/p>\n Gloves being used by the lab technicians were worn out and some even had perforations in them which exposes the staff to many health hazards given the environment in which they work and the type of bio-hazardous substances they sometimes have to handle.<\/p>\n All the units lacked polythene linings for their waste bins.
