Following reports of imminent terror attacks on the country, government has set up a Counter-Terrorism Unit to ward off any attack that might destabilize the peace of the country.

The unit, which will be headed by the National Security Adviser to the President, Baba Kamara, has also been tasked to coordinate all security measures put in place to avert an attack on the country.

President Mahama announced this during a quarterly meeting with members of the Council of State in Accra on Monday.

"mahama

“The National Security has set up a counter-terrorism unit which is chaired by the National Security Adviser. In the course of time, you will find that various people are positioned in different parts of the capital and other cities. We are not looking at only Accra, we are looking at other places just to make sure that response time is very quick in the event that something like this happens,” he said.

President Mahama further added that Ghana is sharing intelligence with neighboring countries in a bid to block such attacks on the country.

“One of the most important things is intelligence sharing, we are getting Intel from our neighbors from Cote D’Ivoire, Burkina Faso among others. We are all alert and watching if there are suspicious people.”

Meanwhile, Security Analyst, Dr. Kwesi Aning, has backed the President’s decision to set up the counter-terrorism unit.

According to him, the move is not only timely, but will contribute to the fight against terrorism.

Terror threat ‘real’

A leaked terror alert notice issued to the various security agencies has suggested that the terror threat on Ghana was “real,” following the confessions of a suspected Malian terrorist being interrogated for his role in the terrorist attack on Cote D’Ivoire.

The choice of Ghana according to the report, is to take away the perception that only francophone countries are the target.

The alert preceded a prophesy by popular Nigerian prophet, TB Joshua, who said he had seen a vision of a possible terrorist attack on Ghana and Nigeria and thus urged his congregants to pray for the nation.
