President John Dramani Mahama has waded into the brouhaha over the Electoral Commission’s (EC) yet to be unveiled logo, saying the heated debate is only putting\u00a0needless pressure on the Commission\u00a0ahead of the November 7 elections.<\/p>\n
The Commission has come under fire for introducing the new logo which critics say is unnecessary especially when it has other pressing matters to deal with ahead of the elections.<\/p>\n
Controversy over new logo <\/strong><\/p>\n [contextly_sidebar id=”kYQBZx6ZScuz80nTiHnImpefp0e8DqV0″]A new logo, which appeared in place of EC\u2019s original logo, had generated a lot of debate amongst the public with some suggesting that the Commission must not change the original one.<\/p>\n While others have criticized the logo as not being original, others say it is of poor quality and does not communicate the functions of the commission.\u00a0Some critics have also said the timing of the new logo is improper.<\/p>\n Logo debate needless <\/strong><\/p>\n But speaking to members of the Council of State during\u00a0their quarterly meeting, President Mahama said the logo debate is needless.<\/p>\n \u201cSome parties have made it a penchant to continuously attack the Electoral Commission for reasons I can\u2019t understand. This is the time to give the EC peace to do its work …I mean how is a logo going to affect the quality of elections in this country? I don\u2019t think it\u2019s a discourse that we should be splitting heads on. I think that our Electoral process has inherent safeguards in it that any serious political party can ensure that it polices that election and ensure\u00a0the integrity of the election.”<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Be decorous in your campaigns<\/strong><\/p>\n The President also charged all political party leaders to be decorous in their campaigns to avert unnecessary tension ahead of the November polls.<\/p>\n He called on the Council of State, the Peace Council and the Christian Council, to ensure that peace prevails before, during and after the election.<\/p>\n \u201cWe believe that as political leaders, we must do our best to ensure that we calm tensions\u2026.As President, I will do everything in my power to ensure that we maintain a calm atmosphere and I hope that the Peace Council, the Council of State, the National House of Chiefs will ensure that other political leaders do not unnecessarily raise political tensions in this country.\u201d<\/p>\n \u00a0–<\/strong><\/p>\n By: Marian Ansah\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana
