The Electoral Commission has denied some media reports suggesting that it featured President John Mahama in its electronic media advertisements for the upcoming limited voter registration exercise.

An advert which features President Mahama urging the country’s youth to go out and register when the EC opens the register for new voters, sparked rumors of a collaboration between the presidency and the EC, which is meant to be independent.

The advert, which forms part of President Mahama’s campaign strategy, features one of the rare cases where an incumbent President appears in an advert with the average voter to discuss electoral issues.

But the EC in a brief statement on its website, said it did not sanction the advert in question.

“This Commission has not produced any advertisement featuring the President of the Republic. Any claims to that effect are false. The Commission is currently in the process of rolling out its own publicity plans for the upcoming limited voter registration exercise. More information on that will be posted here as well as on our website,” their statement said.

In the said advert, President Mahama is seen educating a group of youth on the need for them to register.

The ad, which appears to be owned by the NDC as a party, ends with the ‘JM for 2016’ tag.
