Some thirteen executive members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ablekuma West Constituency of the Greater Accra Region, have defended their decision to resign from the party following disagreements with the party’s Saturday’s primary.

They resigned ahead of the delayed parliamentary primary to select a parliamentary candidate for the constituency.

Speaking to Citi News, a polling station Chairman in the constituency, Jones Atuahene, said the move was based on the National Executive Committee’s (NEC) decision to allow two different registers for the primary.

He also accused the NEC of disrespecting the constituency’s executives and running the elections to favour the incumbent MP, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful.

According to him, four hundred delegates also boycotted the elections.

“…Headquarters never respected the polling station executives, headquarters never respected the constituency executives. The Constituency has not gotten any official letter from regional or national that there is going to be an election. How can they say they are going to amend things after the election? This time around we will make sure they pay dearly for what they have done.”

Mr. Atuahene added that the party’s internal wrangling in the consistency was going to deny them victory in November if not checked.

“If they really want to come to power we need external votes in addition to our votes. How can we get the 50 plus one percent of there is infighting.”

Ursula wins primary

Meanwhile the incumbent MP, Madam Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has beaten her closest contender Roni Nicol, to emerge winner in today’s [Saturday] primary.

Out of the about 1,400 registered voters, only 876 cast their ballot.

Ursula-Owusu polled 554 votes, whiles Roni Nicol garnered 317. There were five rejected ballots.

The third contender, one Theophilus Tetteh pulled out of the race at the last hour following concerns over the voters’ register and has vowed to contest as an independent candidate in November.
