{"id":203505,"date":"2016-04-01T14:43:59","date_gmt":"2016-04-01T14:43:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=203505"},"modified":"2016-04-01T14:43:59","modified_gmt":"2016-04-01T14:43:59","slug":"prof-quarms-textbook-misleading-children-anis-haffar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/04\/prof-quarms-textbook-misleading-children-anis-haffar\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Prof. Quarm&#8217;s textbook misleading children&#8217; &#8211; Anis Haffar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">An educationist, Anis Haffar, says the\u00a0author and publisher of the \u2018Prof. Quarm Series,\u2019 Joseph Albert Quarm, is\u00a0misleading young children and projecting negative stereotypes following his\u00a0classification of the human head as a part of the human body used for\u00a0carrying loads.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He further rubbished the under-fire author and publisher&#8217;s justification of his work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;m8WIh8z1MefqSObZEwLsN3ynjx4STcEW&#8221;]In his \u2018Natural Science for Primary Schools \u2013 Pupil\u2019s Book 1,\u2019 the author\u00a0stated that the human head is used for carrying loads.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This classification has however been heavily criticized on social media, with the Vice President of\u00a0IMANI Ghana, Kofi Bentil, calling for an immediate withdrawal of the books from schools.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking on the <strong>Citi Breakfast Show<\/strong> on Friday morning, Albert Quarm defended his example saying using activity and contextual based learning is the<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2016\/04\/01\/prof-quarm-defends-textbook-depicting-the-head-as-load-carrier\/\" target=\"_blank\"> appropriate\u00a0way<\/a> <\/strong><\/span>to teach children at the primary level.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The human head is not meant for carrying loads<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But reacting to the author\u00a0on the <strong>Citi Breakfast show<\/strong>, Mr. Haffar said even biology dictated that the human head was not intended for carrying loads because it eventually led to the damaging of ones spine over time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt is not normal, the human head was not ordained by God to carry things on the head because what is going to happen is that, the cartilages between the vertebrae are going to get worn out. So that a child who is consistently carrying things on the head will be having problems with the neck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To Mr. Haffar,\u00a0the bigger problem is the fact that young children are being molded and misled with negative stereotypes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWhat bothers me is that we feed on the negative stereotypes on society and we enforce that on young people so they keep reinforcing the negative onto their lives. This is a clear depiction of what this teacher has done,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to him, \u201cprimitive depictions\u201d of things like the example in Prof Quarm\u2019s book should not be used as learning tools because they count as negative exposure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201c&#8230;We put primitive depictions of things as a learning tool; we can\u2019t do that.
