Scores of Ghanaian articulated truck drivers are stranded at the border of neighboring Burkina Faso for not possessing loading permits.

They are however appealing to government to intervene to enable them off-load their goods in Ouagadougou since some of them have been in the area for a about week now.

According to the drivers, they have been detained at the Burkina Faso border for a week now and efforts to get the Burkina Faso authorities at the border to temper justice with mercy have proved futile hence their continuous stay at the border.

"truckOne of the drivers, Enoch Atta told Citi News that “the Burkina Faso authorities prevented us from entering Ouagadougou because we did not have a certain document called bon de chargement also known as loading permit. It was introduced by the Burkina Faso authorities last year, midway they cancelled it and told us that, they will get us informed when they do the reintroduction.”

He said “after they suspended it, this is my third time of coming here we don’t know that they have reintroduced it but when we got here, they said they have reintroduced it yet we don’t have it but if they (Burkina authorities) will allow us to enter Ouagadougou, then we have to pay CAF 200,000 an equivalent of about GHc1,300.00.”

"truck

Mr. Atta said there are about 95 trucks detained at the Burkina border and only those who are willing to pay the penalty of CAF 200,000 are allowed to enter Burkina Faso while those who can’t afford have to wait until the matter is resolved.

He added that, the situation is badly affecting their businesses since they never anticipated such a circumstance and are appealing to government and sector agencies to come to their aid.

Some drivers told Citi News they are cash-strapped and appealed to government to intervene.

But Assistant commander of the Customs division at the Paga border Mr. Emmanuel Lawson in a Citi News interview stated that, according to the ministry of Transport of Burkina Faso, all articulator drivers loading goods from Tema and Tarkoradi ports are mandated to possess a loading permit before they will be allowed into Burkina Faso and defaulters will pay a penalty of CAF 200,000 before they are allowed into Burkina.

"truck

He said, the loading permit which was free for all articulator drivers is to allow the regulation and monitoring of a quota system for both Ghanaian and Burkina articulator drivers and reiterated that, the reintroduction of the loading permit requirement had also been communicated to stakeholders concerned.
